i9 9900k, RTX 2080 95+% CPU usage.

Faultygraphics

So as the title suggest, I just upgraded to an i9-9900k from my i5-4690k cause that was being bottlenecked by my RTX.

Seems that the i9 9900k suffers the same problem when playing BF V etc. Is this suppose to happen, or did I/is something wrong?

I've overclocked the CPU to 5.1 hz on all cores, 16 gigs of ram running at 3100hz. Temps are stable on CPU in the low 80's under full load, GPU temps are stable at low 70's at 100% usage.

 

So to sum up, CPU usage during BF V is 95% or higher GPU usage is 99-100% usage (which is good obviously).

Any help on this, if nothing else just to learn something new here is much appreciated :)

Sounds mostly normal to me.
BFV has a high cpu usage for me too like around 80% with an 8700k @4.9Ghz.
The only thing that might make it different is the resolution you are playing at im on 1440p my guess is you are on 1080p ?

I'm playing on 1080p, 75 hz refresh rate.

Battlefield V is a very demanding game, especially on the CPU.

I'm running around the 70-80 fps mark on highest possible settings. The game runs absolutely flawalessly, just seems like an extremely high CPU usage. I've seen other posts else where, and screensshots where they have about the same fps, resolution and frame rate where their CPU usage is only in the mid to high 60's. Which had me wondering.

I haven't played BF5 but every game I play my CPU usage is like 40 percent avg.  If that 9900k is going to 100 percent usage and choking you out then something is wrong.  Either BF5 engine blows ballz, or something is off with your system.

No, just BFV is very good at using a lot of cores, and the way Nvidia's drivers and such work they also use a few cores, so it's easy to push even an 8c/16t CPU to the max. Especially at 1080p, where the pressure is more on the CPU than the GPU.

Oh ok, so I shouldn't worry then. Seems to work fine on other applications, with reasonable CPU usage in the 30-60%. Not super tech savy, so figured I'd rather ask someone that might know what they're talking about ^_^ Thank you all for the help. I'll just appreciate this pure awesomeness that is my new pc. Up next, 4k monitor! :P

Heck yeah! 2080 should be able to push 4K fine, though you may have to drop some settings in newer/harder to run titles (you can usually get rid of most of the AA and such at 4K). I've got a 1080 Ti, which performs about the same, planning on getting a 1440p ultrawide or 4K monitor in the future too.

Get yourself a 1440p 120hz ultrawide its glorious!

Your next investment should probably be a new monitor if possible, the setup you have can go 1440p 144hz on most AAA title in highest settings.

I can run BFV on 3440x1440p 120 with never dipping below 100 FPS when anything crazy in game happens.

Running a 2080ti though instead of a 2080

Yeah, that would be my next investment as well. But it'll have to wait abit, just sunk £1700 into this rig over the last 2 months.. Wallets getting kinda thin :P

@Faultygraphics I am not sure what could exactly be going on with your system, but I know my 9900K @ 5.1 hovers most of the time in the 45-50% utilization rate and spikes up into the 80s during some moments in the game.  Similar things happen when playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Far Cry 5.  I am running 1080 Tis in SLI that works well for BF5 and Far Cry 5 I have to disable SLI in ACO in order to get the game not to crash.

Mmhm, well in most titles, it runs 40-60% usage. But Battlefield really cranks it up. The posts above made it clear, that BF is a very CPU demanding game. Hopefully that's the reason :)

@Faultygraphics I am only playing story mode, I know I am ancient in liking that, so the CPU i guess really isn't as pushed.

Nice post.  But what resolution you running at ?  This seems weird to me.  Every AAA game Ive played ever since I got my RTX gives CPU usage of avg 40 percent.  Quake Champions being the main game I play.  I have a 7 year old CPU is not older... So I don't understand why Im pushing 40 percent avg in all AAA games and honestly some AAA older titles push like 20 percent CPU usage lol,  If battlefield is chocking out 16 threads of that sexy 9900k then something is wrong imo.

Its all about the Resolution you are playing at.

1080p is more CPU Usage, 1440p and above is more GPU Usage.

 

As far as i see both of you are playing at 1440p or 4k resolution.

No dude, great post.  Wow 3440 horizontal!  My 2080 would go down on its knees.. This is where the Ti kicks in,, …. I can only do 1440p.  Also congrats on winning the silicon lottery.  That 5.1Ghz at 1.29v is soo darn sexy... Drools!!! hm perhaps if I had your CPU I could push 3440x1440 with a 2080 ,,,,,,,,,But ya I settlted for the vanilla as I don't want to game at 4k resolution,, I rather game at 1440p with all AA methods turned on and its free no performance hit and get triple digit fps, compared to 60fps 4k and what not.

@Turtle Rig To be honest I consider myself extremely lucky with my 9900K.  Can't wait for them to fully update the Cinebench thread google docs as I got some great scores in R15 with it.

 

As for the OP I was thinking that the 1080P was probably a factor as @SoreRaito said.  But was not sure so I didn't want to give bad information.  If you have someone you can borrow a higher res monitor from see if that changes things.

You are lucky for that voltage and Mhz.  You freakin won the silicon lottery what else can you ask for heheh. If your system was in my hands I would push for 5.3Ghz at 1.35v or is that pointless lol

@Turtle Rig So I can get it to run 5.3 @ 1.36 vCore for regular tasks but as soon as I hit it with something more demanding it BSODs, @ 1.38 vCore the chip is stable again but at 1.39 with the LLC set to Ultra Extreme which bring the vcore up under load a bit I can benchmark at 5.4 with a 53x multiplier and a 101.95 BCLK.

I still don't get why someone buys a 1080 or a 2080 and games at 1080p.  For 1080p you just need a 1060 6GB or a 2060.  1070 and 2070 if you want to try 1440p and 1080 or 2080 if you want triple digit frame rates at highest settings and all nv panel settings set to max and turned on all AA methods at 1440p.  If you want to push 3440x res, then you need a Ti , plain and simple.

I mean if you have the cooling then go for it.  5.4Ghz is amazing I would devote 1.40v for that.  I mean sheez Im already at 1.456v and my temps are fine.  So ya I would take that 9900k of yours beyond 1.40v  You still have room I bet you can get 5.5Ghz with 1.420v or something like that.

The problem is funds, sometimes we all want the latest and greatest and then when we have to pinch some pennies it is things like the monitor that have to down grade.

It in creases the resolution the frames get rendered in so it increases the load on the GPU and should reduce the load a bit on the CPU.

You can try it out a bit it wont break anything.
