My RTX 2060 is running at 50% usage but i'm not even getting over 60fps.

Pegi_Tw3lve

This is my first time posting here but I've been trying to find out why my games like 'Rise Of The Tomb Raider' and 'GTA 5' are running so poorly. It don't think it can be my CPU as it is at less usage than my GPU - which is at around 50% and at less than 60*C most of the time.  I’m struggling to even get 60fps (sometimes in the 30’s) and after spending hours looking for an answer cannot find any other than to wipe my OS and re download everything - which i really don't want to do . I'm not sure if it is possible that i haven't properly uninstalled my old drivers for my RX 580 (which i recently upgraded from). I'm not sure if it could be my my RAM which i was going to upgrade to 16 gigs so i could utilize dual channel memory as from what i've found it looks like it can give really big performance gains in certain titles and potentially reduce stuttering in GTA 5.

Air cooler for AMD x series? Maybe it's thermals, have you ever tried in another pc or checked the temps?

Something isn’t right here that’s for sure. I’ve got a 2060 with a 1800x and I never have that issue. My gpu usage is always high and framerate is always good.

I reinstalled windows when I went from my 580 to 2060. I also have 2 8gb sticks of ram which I’m sure would help

No cpu mobo or ram atm

is that 8gb 1 stick of ram? if so, that and some messed up timings with a 1600x running at base speed could cause stutters.

Yh it's currently a single stick and i was wondering whether it was my RAM was bottle necking my CPU causing a GPU bottleneck. FYI the usage is at around 7 and a half gigs. I'll also try overclocking my CPU when i get home.

I Also don't think the issue can be my GPU is broken, as when i run the heaven benchmark it runs at 100% usage and the frames are as they should be - when comparing it to similar systems . The only game where it gets fully used is Planet Coaster - which i thought was a CPU bound game, so i couldn't see how it's bottlenecking my GPU. The only thing that doesn't really get used up is my RAM - so it wouldn't be able to bottleneck my CPU. The thing is that when i play planet coaster i can get over 100 fps on 100% usage but on rise of the tomb raider i get like 30 - 60 fps at 50% usage (with V sync off).

Yes, single channel memory, depending on the game, can cripple frame rates by up to 60% on both AMD and Intel CPUs (that's at least the maximum I've seen but it could be worse, even). GTA V is one of those games. Additionally, I suspect that perhaps your RAM is not running at 3000MHz. First generation Ryzen is VERY sensitive to RAM speed. Did you set the XMP profile in your BIOS? And if that motherboard doesn't support XMP, did you set your speed and timings manually based on the RAM kit's specifications? If not, that RAM is only running at 2133MHz.

Here's a great video showing single channel vs dual channel in general. Note that it might seem like most of these are higher FPS scenarios, but there are some segments where if you watch closely, the single channel system dips below 60 FPS where the dual channel system is closer to 90 FPS, especially with Shadow of the Tomb Raider towards the end:

And note that this video is with Intel. Ryzen is even more RAM sensitive and it makes even more of a difference there.

Also, please check your CPU temperature to make sure there isn't thermal throttling happening in addition to the above. It could be an overheating CPU which could mean that the cooler isn't seated 100% properly or maybe there's too little thermal paste.

Double check Windows settings as well to ensure that your power mode isn't throttling the CPU. Sometimes Balanced or Power Saver power mode can be set to limit the CPU's max load to 80% or so. If you're using either of those power modes, try High Performance mode as well.

Finally if all else fails, use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove all traces of your GPU drivers and then reinstall them fresh.

My CPU shouldn't be throttling as it's in the low 50's. I did change the XMP profiles in my bios to 3000mhz (were originally 2133). I've edited the power mode in my NVIDIA control panel and all are set the maximum performance. How would i change the power mode on windows and I'll try buying another RAM stick soon - hopefully that will help. Thanks.

similar for me sometimes it will hardly stutter but then other times it will stutter like hell. I just re start it and it stutters a different amount.

i fixed too much stuttering issue by setting my physx to GPU, though the low usage still occurs on occasional launches

u are severely underestimating how crappy it is to run 1 stick of 8gb ram on ryzen, 8gb is barely enough to begin with, then u add in single channel, likely wrong timings, that cpu is crippled, once you start using page files during a game, it'll stutter like crazy which is what ur experiencing now.

gpu usage not at 100% is usually cause by sync or cpu/ram bottleneck, in this case it's fairly obvious, especailly in gta5

Yh i'm gonna get another RAM stick. It's clear the CPU is not doing too well with it as it's at like 80% in R6 when i shouldn't be. Thanks and hopefully it will solve my issue.

Make sure you buy the same brand you already have with the same timings and speed, or just buy a new 16GB kit to ensure that they match. Having mismatched memory can also cause huge problems from a stability standpoint.

If you're on Windows 10, in the search bar type in "Edit Power Plan" then hit enter. Then click on the link that says "Change advanced power settings," then click on the dropdown at the top of the resulting window and select High Performance (if it's not already selected).

yes i get 50% gpu usage in csgo and get around 200fps, some high end games like BFV is fine but low end games seems to struggle and give low gpu usage therefore low fps

It's because you don't need to run the card at 100% in these games if you are getting 200fps it's just not necessary for the GPU to be running at 100%.
