Leaving computer on while I'm at work to download Steam

I'm looking for some peace of mind here. I have a 2700x with a Noctua NH D-15 cooler, and a RTX 2080 ti FE. I left my computer on to download GTA V while I'm at work.

 

There shouldn't be any issue with this right? The CPU isn't being overclocked.

Its idling, not like you left a game running at 4k ultra while you left. It'll be fine.

People leave machines on 24/7 OC'd to hell and back all over the world.

 

Look at your workplace, I will guarantee there are some PC's there that haven't been power cycled for weeks, let alone turned off at night.  I see 3 in my sight line a my office right now :)

 

Question:  Just what do you think could possibly happen, and why do you think it's unsafe just because you're not that there to watch it?   Do you never leave the dishwasher running when you leave the house either?   Now I am totally intrigued.

It should be fine, it will probably even put itself to sleep after a while depending on your power settings.

 

For future reference, you could do a number of things to help you manage this in future.

 

You could check to see how long the download will take, and then run a command in cmd to shut the system down after a certain amount of time. open up windows Command Prompt and enter (without quotes):

"shutdown /s /f /t 1800"

This should shut the system down in 30 minutes, you can adjust the timing however you need. The time is in seconds.

"shutdown /a" will abort any shutdown you have scheduled, in case you need to cancel.

Alternatively, install TeamViewer. You can then either install TeamViewer on your computer at work, or on your phone. Then you can connect to your home computer at any time to monitor and manually shut it down if you need to.

I've left my i7-8700k w/ GTX 1080 on for over a week straight, no issues at all. You have nothing to worry about, a built PC is not like a delicate old sports car, you can push them pretty far. And with that big Noctua cooler, you definitely have nothing to worry about ever.

The temps you get under 1-3h of stress testing is highest it will go. Steam download doesn't stress your machine enough to even reach gaming temps. Meaning that you could be downloading and running all kinds of other things while being all good. I leave my PC on sometimes during days to download or render things. If it has failure, there's autoshutdown.
