Google might be cutting back it's laptop & tablet manufacturing, tells employees to seek alternative roles inside Alphabet

Google has reportedly told several members of it's "create" division to apply for alternative roles elsewhere within Alphabet raising concerns about the future of its laptop and tablet hardware. Create is the team responsible for its Pixelbooks and Pixel Slate Tablets.

Raising questions over its future plans in the hardware business, Google has reportedly told several employees in its laptop and tablet division to find other roles at the company.

 

According to the Business Insider, the move is aimed at trimming Google's "Create" division which manufactures the Pixelbook laptop and Pixel Slate tablet, among other products.

 

Other hardware teams at Google develop Pixel smartphones, "Home" smart speakers and Wearables.

According to sources Google is seeking to reduce the number of both engineers and managers on the team. Google has declined to comment.

"According to one source, the Create hardware team had a bunch of stuff in the works' and that the cutting the number of hardware engineers and programme managers on the team will likely pare down the portfolio' of products," the report said on Wednesday.

 

The affected workers have been told to seek temporary roles within other Google or Alphabet teams.

 

A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the development.

Tablets have fallen way out of popularity in recent years so I get that one but small factor notebooks are all the rage right now. This doesn't make any sense to me.

Maybe if they consider cutting down their product price maybe they would get more sales eh?

Until chromeOS doesn't suck they have no right to sell such expensive hardware. 

 

The hardware itself is fantastic, the software is not and putting those two together basically guarantees few sales

Chrome OS doesn't do half of what windows does and costs the same as a Windows laptop. That's the issue Google. People buy a chrome book only to find it doesn't do what they expected and return it.

 

Make chrome OS function more like Linux/Windows and you'll sell them better.

some small tweaks to the pixel slate and win 10 on it, people would maybe consider it. 

 

but i dont see this as super surprising. im surprised they arent pushing through tho.

Chrome OS is basically Android at this point which isn't bad for schools

It’s works pretty well for chrome books. It now supports to whole playstore too so it’s gotten much better. It also support dual booting with crouton and much more. It looks dumb from the outside but once you use it for 4 years it isn’t as bad as people say and battery life pushing 6 days is insane

I actually don't inherently have a problem with that as cheaper alternatives are usually lacking in other important ways. The problem is that there isn't a compelling reason for most people to switch to a Chromebook especially at such a high price.

I'm saddened by the slow demise of Android-tablets. I am in need of an upgrade to my tablet, but there seems to only be a handful of Android-tablets available nowadays and they're all either really shitty pieces of crap, or WAY overpriced bullshit, like e.g. Samsung's ones. Oh, and they all suffer from horribly bastardized versions of Android -- no close-to-stock ones, as far as I can see -- and you're lucky to receive even two firmware-updates in the entire lifetime of them.

This makes me kind of sad, even though chrome OS isn't going anywhere, the pixel line has always performed exceptionally well.


But I do agree, if they released versions of these with Windows or even maybe a different linux distro

When my Shield Tablet died (still miss it) I bought a Samsung S2, only cost me around £200 and immediately I rooted it and flashed Cyanogenmod 15 onto it. Turned it from a bloatware filled POS to a stock running thoroughbred.

 

These days it runs CM16 or Android Pie.

Never missed it tbh but I only ever Netflix on my smart TV. Watching TV and movies on a 9" screen is pointless IMO.

On a more serious note, I don't remember a tablet from google after nexus 9, not to mention with the exception of real laptop manufacturers asus,dell,hp etc I have not actually noticed a "directly from" google chromebook being discussed anywhere. So honestly that question is only half a joke. And usually people just talk about flashing some linux distro on  the chromebook so they have a more competent and useful machine. Google clearly overestimated their chrome OS and didn't really put in the effort to create a competitive OS( or even a linux distro).

Don't forget the Pixel C and Pixel Slate!  (The Slate runs Chrome OS)

Honestly if you are just using it to look at PDFs, web browse, and use the google suite it's way batter than a windows netbook. They can be much cheaper and better quality. They also can run off ARM based CPUs so they are much more efficient then a windows 10 based netbook.
