UPDATE: Server configuration change to blame after Facebook suffers the most severe outage in its history, Instagram and WhatsApp also affected

Users of Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus Rift have been experiencing issues connecting to the services for at least 10 hours.

Estimates suggest the issue began around 16:00 GMT on Wednesday.

 

While Facebook's main service appeared to load, users reported not being able to post.

 

Those on Instagram were not able to refresh feeds or post new material. Facebook Messenger's desktop version did not load - but the mobile app appeared to allow the sending of some messages; however, users reported glitches with other kinds of content, such as images. WhatsApp, Facebook's other messaging app, had similar problems.

 

A third-party outage map suggested the problem was global - DownDetector monitors posts on other social networks for users mentioning a loss of service elsewhere.

Whilst Facebook has been unwilling to disclose the exact cause of this 'partial outage' they did mention the outage was not the result of Distributed Denial of Service attack or DDoS.

My Thoughts:

For Facebook this is obviously bad news and some companies rely on Facebook and their services to conduct business. On the other hand, this affected me very little and I think the mass hysteria online indicates a society addicted to their devices and to social media. I'm all for people limiting their use of social media and services like Facebook and Instagram, but, maybe not this way...

 

I'm not sure if many people on the forum particularly care about Facebook and this story but I felt it was noteworthy just given the length and global scope of the outage. If they release a statement indicating what the caused this outage I'll append it to my original post.

Facebook on the record has stated the close to 14 hour outage was the result of a server configuration change.

Everyone should have listened to @leadeater, he was on to it from the beginning!

I noticed a lot of things not working and slowing down incrementally from the prior evening for me, so whatever it is seems more like it ramped up slowly.  Perhaps memory not being free'd on a server or some sort of internal network storm or recursive loop of something slipped through into their back end code.  DDoS could also explain this sort of ramp up attack, if you don't believe FB at their statement.

They actually released the reasoning. Basically their own traffic turned against them and caused an infinite loop of database look ups. While not a DDOS in a traditional since it's still pretty bad.

 

Edit: Apparently that was the 2010 outage that I was referred to

I’m more concerned with how many people still use Facebook. If you think what they want to court for was bad they have only ramped up what they are doing

I actually only knew about these outages from folks talking about in Discord.  I don't use two of them and third I rarely get on in a blue moon.
