Apple has confirmed its next major event, with a major launch later this month.

The event will happen on 25 March, the company announced, alongside a teaser that made heavy reference to films.

The announcement does not give away any details of what the company is getting ready to launch at the event. But it appears to confirm one major rumour about what is coming.

 

The invitation includes the phrase "it's showtime", in an apparent reference to its widely-rumoured video subscription service. That platform – which is expected to be a rival to Netflix, and include some films and video made by Netflix itself – has been the subject of repeated leaks, which have suggested that it could launch very son.

The company used the exact same wording for an event in 2006. At that launch, it announced that it would start offering films through the iTunes Store, as well as revealing what was then called the iTV but would be renamed the Apple TV.

 

The new invitation made similarly heavy references to film, with journalists receiving a moving image that showed a classic countdown before announcing the tagline.

At the same March event, Apple is expected to launch a paid-for news subscription service. Rumours suggest that will allow people to pay a single fee for access to magazines, bundling a subscription to different news and magazine services into one platform.

Repeated leaks have also suggested that Apple is working on a host of new hardware, including updated AirPods and a refresh of the iPad. Many customers also hope to see the release of the AirPower charging mat – which was first announced more than a year ago, but was delayed and has been largely undiscussed by Apple.

While rumours have suggested that the upcoming event will focus on the new online services, it is possible that the company will unveil new products either at or around the event.

The announcement of the March event came as Donald Trump continued to rage about an apparent gaffe in which he referred to the company's boss, Tim Cook, as "Tim Apple".

This being said, I don't see alot of hardware expectations here.   I should like to see at least some announcements on hardware via press release and maybe even Air Pods 2.   but this will likely be a service event as most March events are.

I lost my Airpods a while back (I think they were stolen but I'm not sure) and I've been holding out on buying new ones forever because Airpods 2 was always just around the corner.

 

I think a video streaming service could prove successful, but I'm not paying extra $10 for it. Bundle it with Apple music and we'll be fine. Even its a few dollars extra for the combined bundle, that would be reasonable.

Will they release a new iPad? Just the basic model. I ask because I'm going to have to invest in one for controlling my digital mixing consoles remotely (Yamaha only supports iOS for some unholy reason).

I think its a smart decision for them, as Apple keeps increasing prices of their phones despite lower sales,and macs don't account for much of their overall profits.

Tbh I might subscribe just because, if it’s like Apple Music, you’ll have the full range of iTunes to choose from.

Apple has been actively growing their services market for a while now, and is just about to kick it into high gear with additional services as well, such as the video platform.  Pricing and content availability are likely what will make it work or not work going forward, as they've already been putting deals into place with other 3rd parties such as smart TVs and smart speakers to work with Apple Music and similar.

 

I don't expect hardware at this event, though possibly some via press release shortly after.  It would be possible, however, to mention how great the new service works full quality on all the different sizes of iPad or something like that though, not putting focus on the hardware, but mentioning it in the process.  It would also be possible to mention new hardware with partnership models, such as if they make a deal with Verizon/ATT/Sprint/TMobile to not count their services data towards a 4G data cap or something like that.  I don't think Apple is really interested in those kinds of deals though, but who knows, they could surprise us.

There are hints of new iPads in the pipeline soon, but whether or not they show up at the event is another story.  I could see Apple announcing them by press release either shortly before (say, on the 18th or 19th) or sometime after.

 

As for why that mixing console only supports iOS?  It's probably a few things.  Apple has generally been better about low-latency sound than Google (Android Q may address that with MIDI devices), and it typically requires lots of work to ensure compatibility on Android if you want to support more than a handful of phones and tablets.  That and, let's face it, the Android tablet market is a shambles compared to the iPad.

Hopefully.   Yet IPad hopes ramped down over the last weeks.

As for why that mixing console only supports iOS?  It's probably a few things.  Apple has generally been better about low-latency sound than Google (Android Q may address that with MIDI devices), and it typically requires lots of work to ensure compatibility on Android if you want to support more than a handful of phones and tablets.  That and, let's face it, the Android tablet market is a shambles compared to the iPad.

That doesn't actually have anything to do with it. You control your console through the app which actually uses the wifi connection of the tablet to an already set up network that your console is on. You literally use homeowner type wireless routers and patch your console into it, then set up static IP's, SSID, password, etc. I think Yamaha only supports iOS because it perhaps might be easier to optimize the app for the hardware, where as Android tablets have a wide range of hardware platforms they can potentially run off of making them much harder to optimize (my guess anyway). Also the Android tablet market isn't a shambles, there's an ass load of stuff available and good stuff at that. It's just that people usually cheapout when they buy Android because they think it's the money saving way compared to Apple, much like that of AMD and Intel (in reference to LTT's latest video). I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A that is an absolute joy to use. Very snappy, very quick, and I never have an issue with it. The biggest reason I prefer it is because of the expandable storage, something that would turn the damn tides if Apple would finally support.

Generally I can hold onto my Apple tech for awhile and have adopted some of their services. I don't think after paying for YouTube Red, Netflix, and FloatPlane I would be willing to purchase another services. Maybe if it was bundled into Apple Music (which I do subscribe to) I'd use it more but with how little I buy or rent movies from the iTunes store already I doubt it's on my radar.

yeah I think $15-$20 a month for Apple Music + TV would be very reasonable. I'd consider it over Netflix frankly. Simply for the fact that Netflix has been raising their prices and if they can get just about the same content availability for movies and tv that they have for songs, if it was literally locked down to Apple devices or the devices got some special treatment, I'd plunge further into the apple eco system lol
I already got back into their ecosystem with my iPhone XR on AT&T, I've sorta been itching to save for a mac as a secondary computer to the PC I built and maybe get an Apple TV or two or three (My room, living room, her room), I mean my mom has an iPhone 8 on Verizon.

 

Actually I'm really surprised Apple hasn't jumped in the crowd of branded smart tvs like TCL/Toshiba/Insignia TVs with FireTV or RokuTV

I heard apparently some Samsung TVs were getting some access to Apple TV functions but not the entire tvOS

It's not surprising at all, really -- TVs aren't a great business to be in.  They're commodity items without huge profits, and the efforts to boost profits usually revolve around ads (something Apple understandably isn't keen on).  Better to make the services that run on the TVs (or media hubs like the Apple TV) than the TV itself.

 

On the Samsung part: newer (2018/2019) sets from the company will have access to iTunes movie and TV shows.  Also, a whole bunch of TV makers are adding AirPlay 2 support, so you can cast videos one way or another.

I should explain why the Android tablet market is a shambles.  Specifically, there's been a race to the bottom -- Android started with a wide variety of tablets, but quickly devolved into a glut of $100-or-less glorified Netflix viewers with only the occasional exception.  Apple effectively owns the $300-and-up space.  There's also the software issue: Google has never properly supported Android tablets. It believes that all it needs to do is offer a few lines of optimization code and maybe occasionally feature tablet apps on the Play Store.  Meanwhile, Apple has extensive tablet development tools, and when you visit the App Store on an iPad you see only tablet-optimized apps by default.

 

You can do many things on Android tablets, but the market is such that if you want a mobile tablet for even slightly more than casual use, you get an iPad.

Then streaming's not for you, simple as that. You don't (usually) have to stream what you want to watch, especially concerning bigger-budget films and more popular TV shows.

That's not locked into a walker garden ecosystem. That's plain and simply a service rather than a physical good. Most services (not just in tech), by their very nature, are ephemeral.

 

But I guess you must have built your own ISP, gas/electric plant, delivery service, etc... So the many benefits and very obvious walled garden pitfalls of services don't apply to you.
