Why is AMD the Budget Option for Gamers?

If I were to make a suggestion, I would say that there should be a better attempt to make it clear that the video only targets gaming performance next time, given that the preamble at the beginning of the video with Linus was the only indication of it. The video starts off with talking about gaming but then after keeps using general terms when talking about performance, while Gaming just like Encoding for instance is just one part of the wide spectrum of common use.

I think the best way to do this would just be a simple rename of the title, the original working title sounds fine but even a small adjustment like Gaming: Is AMD for Poor People? would go a long way.

On an unrelated note: I really liked the format of the video.

I would be what is called the definition of middle class - and while not at all put off by being labeled poor in a tacky click bait title from a multimillion dollar company - surprised you would go this route unless you are defining your channel.

Honestly while i like intel nvidia over amd i always thought on lower end that amd would destroy intel since all the love amd has been getting since ryzen came out. Then again i was never convinced having 6 cores was that much of an improvement over 4 cores for gaming. I personally dont care about streaming and editing and i bet a lot of gamers don't too so thank god he went straight to gaming. I'm quite surprised seeing them this close.

You are certainly offended, I don't like it either but I have learned to just completely ignore the title and go straight into the video. It doesn't bother me though.

Why not showcase one of AMD's top tier CPUs and pair it up against Intel's top offering.

I love LTT, I love their videos. But I can't support this. I'm sorry but the idea that AMD is just for poor people is absolutely outrageous. Maybe it's not for the majority of the super rich. Maybe the 9900k and it's skylake-x brothers come into play in that case. But for those who look at VALUE alone, for those who choose a reasonable option that provides a perfect balance, you cannot escape the fact that the 2700x is the better flagship.

 

This review is flawed. What about situations other than gaming? Streaming for example. LTT knows darn well that the 2600 absolutely WIPES THE FLOOR with the i5 8400 due to it having 6c/12t compared of the 8400's 6c/6t when streaming. Where was that in the comparison? What about other benchmarks in workloads like blender, premiere and other things? In those workloads it's a back and forth affair. LTT has mentioned previously that the 2600 is a budget workstation cpu. You could even go deeper and suggest that the 2600 is more future-proof as games are heading towards utilising more and more threads.

 

This is basically advising people to go 'don't immediately go to AMD, Intel is still here!'. You showed the strengths of Intel, and it didn't even win in that. So let's show the other stuff where you know the 2600 destroys the 8400. Let's provide a balanced review where you show both Intel's strengths and AMD's strengths and combine that to create a good conclusion. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say it is disappointing of the way that LTT approached this.

 

And you said in the video you'd go and see what the builds did. Yet you used the usual test bench instead. As someone mentioned, one build had 1 x 8gb of ram and the other had 2 x 4gb. That wasn't shown either and makes things even more unfair for AMD.

I really don't know where some people are getting the idea that we're saying AMD is for poor people or that it's a worse value than Intel or that you should run out and buy an Intel CPU over AMD. We point out that for gaming - A workload that AMD is perceived to be worse at than Intel - the difference is not worth stressing over, and we point out that you can get more out of the platform for the same price as Intel.

 

If that says to you "AMD sux buy Intel", then I don't know what to tell you.

While this was interesting, I'd be more inclined to see how the builds stack up in price when going for the same performance and locking case/psu/ram/graphics card.

 

I'd also be curious to see what the most budget "playable" system is for the current crop of games, as well as what is the best overall value across each side, and where that price point lies.  AKA, make a bunch of systems to get the value proposition (% performance per dollar), and see where the sweet spot is for each.  Maybe that's in the i5 and Ryzen 5 line as most would expect, or maybe it's really in the i7 and Ryzen 7 line, which would also "futureproof" you a bit more in the process, due to more cores if it were true.

 

In short, I'd like to see "what is the best bang for the buck I can get from each cpu/mb combo and each graphics card"…rather than "what's the best I can do for $X?".  @GabenJr Any chance of making some of that happen?  It'd even be a really cool thing to keep in a DB for future comparisons/reviews of new processors or graphics cards.

Also, it would be interesting to see how those numbers hold up if some common other actions were happening on the system, such as Discord being active with voice and a browser open to a forum of the game being tested or something like that.

 

I could see that being a highly common use case that is affected by core count for game performance, much like streaming would effect it even further (and would typically also have similar apps added to the work load in addition to the streaming one).

AMD is for the smart spender who has a budget small enough that doesn't allow you to get a top-tier GPU.

 

If Zen 2 actually manages to beat Intel in the only thing they are currently good at (single core performance), then it's gonna be an interesting turn for the PC building community.

@GabenJr I have some questions

 

It's clear to me that you guys didn't use the actual parts lists you've selected when doing the benchmarks(as is evident with what I assume is the crosshair VII X470 motherboard used for AMD in the short clip before benchmark results), but

• If you weren't going to just outright buy the parts you've picked, why not tell us the actual parts being used? It's kind of a bait and switch you're pulling here by saying "here's the performances you can expect with this hardware" but then proceed to use high end hardware that cost a lost more than 750$.

 

• In your parts list you've chosen an A320 motherboard on the AMD side.
  This chipset is non-overclockable, meaning talking about overclocking AMD's CPU and its potential extra performances is wrong in the first place. So why even mention overclocking at all for this budget build?
  Someone who doesn't know any better, might take your list as gospel and buy an A320 motherboard thinking it can overclock. Please understand this.

 

• Did you use single channel memory on the Intel side like it was shown on the parts list or did you guys use the same dual/quad channel memory kit for both AMD and Intel? Apparently this point got some people butthurt on this forum and in the youtube comments, saying dual channel memory gets you higher performances on Intel so Linus should've taken a 2x4 kit that was barely a few dollars more than 1x8 and fitted in the 750$ budget just fine.

I tuned the memory to the same timings, and set everything up with stock / AMD-default performance profiles (that is, no performance enhancements that might be enabled by default by ASUS). The overclock was very mild, as the chip I used couldn't handle much more than +100MHz without becoming unstable, so the board would not have been a limiting factor (particularly on a six-core).

Ryzen is fine for what it is, and at present, if you are playing at any resolution at 75hz or less, Ryzen is absolutely the better value. You're wasting your money on Intel if you are playing at these refresh rates.

 

However, if you are aiming for 144hz+, unlocked Intel + a strong graphics card is the only way to go. Similarly, you're wasting your money on Ryzen CPUs because you just aren't getting there nearly as reliably or easily, and your monitor is going to waste.

 

Right tool, right job.

@GabenJr Could you ask if the title of this video can be changed after the 'clickbait' viewer wave is over? I think more people need to see this video if they search for terms like 'price performance' or 'budget game/gaming pc'. I think the number of views has the potential to climb a lot further after the first wave. 

It is currently at ~400k views (posting this for future reference, I'm interested in the numbers too)
