Dead Motherboard/CPU after PSU change?

Folienstift

Hey,

a few days ago I bought a new PSU (Corsair RMx750W) because 500W probably won't be enough for the 2080 i'm going to buy soon. I also bought a new PC case, so I had to install the mainboard into the new case. After installing everything the PC started normally and it was on for like 20-30 Minutes and then i restarted it to install some Windows Updates. The PC restarted itself but since then i haven't even been able to get in the BIOS, all I get is a black screen. All fans (including the CPU fan) are spinning, hard drives are on, the LEDs of my mainboard are on, but i get no image and on start up the CPU_LED and DRAM_LED ist on, but turns off after a few seconds (I don't know if it's been like that before). Since i sold my GPU i only tried with onboard graphics.

Things i already tried:

  • Change to old PSU -> Same results, no image

  • Unplug everything except Mainboard + CPU Cable -> Same result

  • BIOS + CMOS Reset -> Same result

  • Checked if CPU fan is running and the Front Panel is connected properly

Is it possible that the PSU fried my mainboard/CPU? and how can i test wether only one or both of the components are actually dead? If so do you think Corsair would pay for the damage if i could prove that it was not my fault? Could it be something different than a faulty PSU?

My PC:

ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING

I7-6700K

Corsair RMx750W

Thanks in advance :)

Try it outside the case. And only the most necessary parts.

What brand and model was your 500W PSU? Did you change the cables over to the cables that were supplied with the new Corsair PSU. Cables may not be pin compatible between the old and new PSU (this can happen even if you remain with the same brand of PSU).

I just tried it outside of the case with only the Mainboard and CPU Cable connected, still nothing. Also changed the RAM, it still doesn't work.

How do i have to proceed now? How can i tell if its the motherboard or the cpu or even both? I dont have an additional motherboard/cpu to test..

Hm, check the motherboard for bent pins (once you remove the CPU) and blown capacitors.

You could also try booting without the CPU to see if the board will show any codes or beeps or led activity.

Checked that already a few hours ago but there was nothing wrong.

This may be a stupid question, but since I did an Windows update before, it theoretically is possible that a microcode update from Microsoft killed my CPU, isn't it?

So i just connected a beeper to the Mainboard but it doesnt make any sound when starting the PC normally. It does make a sound when i for example remove the RAM. What does that tell me?

It should beep at least once to indicate everything is ok in most motherboards I've had.

I'd say check the m/b manual if you still have it to see what no beeping would indicate, as this can differ from board to board.  Not beeping at all however, is definitely not normal.
