"Headless" Dummy Plugs

DezGalbie

Why are these dummy HDMI plugs more expensive than real HDMI cables?

Do they do something special that wouldn't be achieved by simply plugging in a cable?

Do you need one of these to fool your system into thinking a monitor is attached? Simply plugging in an HDMI cable with nothing on the other end won't have the same effect?

Yes, simply putting your hdmi cable into the computer does nothing, so no, not the same effect at all.

So the headless plug has some electronics in it that makes your computer think that it is a monitor.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

most of the time a dummy plug has resistor bridging 2 connections to make it think somethings plugged in though there arent many uses for the and thus its a niche market which is why its expensive due to a low demand. they used to be used for crypto mining but since then the need for them has been patched. and in general pretty useless unless your to lazy to do some x server config or windows screen emulators since thats the only other use case for them these days

Not just the electronics (one resistor but whatever) inside of it, but it is also a very low volume product compared to an HDMI cable, so the markup will be much more.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
