No more bragging rights :(

Chronified

For the longest time I was able to brag among my friends about my internet speed being better than even Linus Tech Tips.

They all bring their desktops/laptops over whenever they need to download a huge update or 50GB+ game.

I have unlimited 1.5Gbps down and 970mbps up at home, paying $92+tax (Canadian) for just the internet.
It was fun while it lasted, but it has come time for my bragging rights to come to an end since Linus upgraded to a 10Gbps link :(

Big difference between needing and wanting :P I just want the bragging rights, I still haven't figured out how to unify 2 ethernet adapters (intel+PCIe) to go over 1Gbps so upgrading from here would be even further overkill lol.

Pretty sure I need a PCIe LAN adapter with 2xgigabit, not using the intel one and a single PCIe but meh, I've been too busy with my new 1660 ti to figure it out lel

honestly I thought about getting gigabit internet but just haven't seen a reason to. My stuff still downloads really fast with 300 mbs internet and any faster and the drive write speed becomes an issue.

Must be a CPU bottleneck or you're still running a SataII motherboard??

Most Sata SSDs can easily/nearly saturate the 600Mbps that SataIII provides (Sata II is 300Mbps).

For now, my RAM caches upto 5GB of download as it waits for my SSD to catch up, but if I were running a pretty good NVMe drive (and figured out paired ethernet) I could reach that 1.5Gbps write and download at the same time.

At this point I'm not even sure why I got gigabit since the max I've been able to download an actual product is 500MBPS  and that was from steam. Just saying though you can get 10gig for $299 a month if you wanted it from my provider. My provider does offer 500mbps service which I think I'm going to swap to and save myself $25 a month (paying $70 now).   The true benefit though is just having fiber in general the lower pings are great and talk about instant speed.

Running an overclocked 8700k so I would have to say no. I am using a harddrive for most of my of my big downloads. Yeah it's not much of an issue with my 860 evo but I generally dont download large files onto it so it really wouldn't benefit from the extra speed. I just dont see the point of paying for more than what I have because when I do download large files it is usually on my harddrive in which case it will make little difference. I also dont download alot of large files to begin with. Most of the time I am just using different streaming services and playing games both of which dont take up alot of bandwidth.

I had to do a survey when looking at new equipment and 99% of our customers didn't pass 112mbps and that was just peaks.

Sure downloads can max it out but for most, 100 is more than enough

I live by myself so it is very hard for me to even use 100mbs if I am not downloading something.

No doubt its hard to do. 4k netflix can in burst for buffer but the fact that we have a college dorm  as a customer with a gig connection and each student has best effort speeds and they still dont break 7-800mbps. Thats a 1,000 people.
