Will a VPN protect me from IP address spoofing?

I got a DMCA violation warning from Xfinity for a torrent. I haven't torrented anything. I don't even have any torrent clients! Is it possible that someone spoofed my IP address for their torrent and now I'm taking the fall for it? Also would a VPN protect me from this kind of thing? Thanks in advance.

A VPN would prevent the DMCA violation, however, I would talk to your telco about the one you got to see if you can dispute it. They would need to spoof your location, address, be in the same Dmark (I could be wrong on this one) and have the same service provider. Pretty unlikely that a Spoof could get you a strike. I suspect someone in your apartment complex/house/neighborhood 

 

Edit: I torrent all the time, highly recommend with a VPN service.

Ok then it would be worth it to prevent further incidents, and I'll contact them about disputing it. They gave me the IP address where the violation originated from and when I searched for its geolocation it was nowhere near me. Not sure how accurate those are though. 

 

I thought it was someone in the apartment complex or using my Xfinity hotspot login, but the only MAC addresses in my router are my devices. Xfinity also tracks the number of devices used for hotspots and those are also all accounted for. I changed my router and Xfinity passwords to be safe.

No, it wouldn't. It'd only prevent that if the OP was, indeed, the originator of the downloads.

Correct. I thought I portrayed it that way, my bad! 

 

OP. If you want to torrent and use a VPN, you will not get a DMCA violation as long as the VPN is reputable and is of industry standard.

A pretty common occurrence is that someone had previously the same IP-address as your modem has now; those IP-addresses are dynamic and can change randomly, so if someone else had your current IP-address, downloaded something, and then your modem got the IP-address, it wouldn't be that far-fetched for one of those anti-torrent companies to think it was you.

Seems like having an IP address isn't good ground for Comcast/Xfinity to flag my account. What kind of proof would I need to provide to dispute the claim?

The thing is, you can't really prove anything. Legally, the onus is on the accuser, not the accusee. That said, IANAL, nor do I know how Xfinity handles these things, so it would perhaps be best to call them and specifically tell them that you have no knowledge of any such downloads.

They just forward you the claim but won't really do anything about it in most cases. There isn't really anything you can do to prove it wasn't you anyway and just an IP address is not enough for anyone to do anything anyway. Additionally a VPN won't help at all, it will just mask the IP address sites see you coming from and that's it.

Lol the first thing you DON'T want to do is contact them after a claim like this. They will never believe you and if they aren't asking for your input it makes you much more suspicious to them. If I was OP I want change passwords on all routers and make sure smart devices are locked down on a separate internal network.  War driving has evolved and if he was WPS enabled anyone can see his password

Just keeping this here as a Well I saw this after contacting them. They verified that it was someone using my Xfinity login to access an Xfinity hotspot. I changed my password and turned on 2FA (yes, I should have had it on before). They seemed to believe that it wasn't me, but I don't really know. Now I get to go change all my passwords just in case.

Well it they said it was from an xfinity hotspot then that would just be your login. Also Xfinity can use your wifi as a hotspot for people to connect to if it's enabled which is an awful idea

Maybe it has changed, but over a decade ago when I discovered torrenting I downloaded tons of stuff, got notifications all the time and always just ignored them. A year and several notifications later my mom found out about one and forced me to call into Charter because the notification says to. They said please delete your content, stop torrenting, and have a good day. I kept going it for another year or so, they never did anything more than send the notifications.

Firstly you cant count of geolocation, most of the time those databases are not right. If you look up mine it shows it for a city near where I live but not for the city I live in. I think the geo tags come from where the central office is in your area.

Dont bother. This is just a tap on the shoulder telling you to stop pirating. Most people ignore it and keep pirating. Its when the letter comes from a lawyer or the courts you need to worry. If you are pirating, use a VPN, that should provide a layer of protection.

Sounds like someone was using your account creds to use the free Xfinity hotspots that they provide. Most gateways from Xfinity provide a free Hotspot to their customers. While this network is seperate from yours, any one can connect to it. I think non Xfinity customers get X amount of time, but Xfinity customers can use all the data in the world. But if someone got your account creds and logged in to a hotspot somewhere else, then Xfinity used that info to forward the letter to you. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
