I actually bought this kit from ORIA on amazon with really similar tools, and it was a complete POS. It was only $27 US though.

I bought a screwdriver kit similar to the one shown, it was 12.99 on Amazon.  It's worked great and did come with security bits.

I would expand my iFixit kit with some of them, but I already have expanded it with a "standart" 1/4 Bitkit Wera 05056490001 & a Bosch GSR 12V-15 with Wera 05052502001 & a 15cm & 30cm extention.

And in my dayly bag (as DC Engineer) I've a Wera 05057460001 & 05073660001, because in most cases more force need to be transferred to the screws for mounting Switches that the customer only delivers without full rack rails (especialy with swiches longer that 40cm) and only with the front brackets that went too easily.

That's about the time I picked up the same 54 bit driver kit from my local Fry's. Short of lacking the prying tools I needed to take a tablet apart this kit has always had what I needed to fix EVERYTHING from watches to a full-on workstation.

 

My only criticism of the screwdriver are those three rubber o-rings they have for grip - they just don't work, especially with oily/sweaty fingers. I have a precision jewelers set that uses a slotted knurled grip along the entire shaft - MUCH BETTER to grip than what iFixit did with their smooth shaft. I do really like the rotating end as it makes turning with one hand almost effortless.

 

Also, I wish iFixit would keep their inventory around longer. I would have liked to get the 128 piece universal bit kit they had in the wooden box - that was the best one they made IMO. Anybody know where I can find one for sale???

Keep in mind that China is notorious for making lousy steel so anything you buy with Chinese steel may not hold up well

I actually bought the cheap orange cased jakemy as shown in the thumbnail to do a repair on my wife's MacBook Pro.  The pentalobe bit twisted a full quarter rotation TAKING OUT THE FIRST SCREW!  You can see my review on amazon if you search.  The handle and such were nice though.  Wish the bits didn't suck.  I have an ancient "BoXer" small driver set that I got as a gift about 20 years ago now when I went into IT work, which still works and holds up great…but doesn't have all of the pentalobe and split types of bits.  Next time I need any of those, I'll probably break down and just order the replacement bits from ifixit to add to my old kit.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R2KLXVAUDOTMS4

Where do you think ifixit is getting those steel bits from? They certainly aren't being made in the USA. Being China made isn't why they are garbage. The low cost is the reason.

If you're that worried about the quality of the steel just search for a Precision Kit with S2 steel from Amazon.

You need to pay more attention to what you are reading. I did not say China made nothing but lousy steel. Tthe fact is they do make a lot of lousy steel, especially for export. The large scale machine shop warehouse I once worked in (I routinely unloaded 60' structural steel) would not accept Chinese steel because much of it was lousy and the certs were often falsified. We would accept South Korean steel, though. I also never said all products from China may be garbage. I said things from China MAY not hold up well. I buy a lot of product completely or partially made in China that are just fine but I've gotten a lot of crap that was made there.

 

You can't always use price as a gauge for quality for anything. It's not unusual for high priced products to be lower quality than lower priced products, especially when brand name recognition and former reputation is factored in. There are many brands I used to swear by (Black and Decker, Stanley, Emerson, Craftsman, Kenmore, etc.) that I now swear at.

It's all about quality control when big company names are at stake. Some off brand on eBay doesn't give a damn about that. But I'm pretty sure iFixit or big names like Unior here in Europe very much care about the quality levels. They may as well produce stuff in China, but they'll make sure things meet high quality standards, because they can't have poor quality tainting their brand name globally.

 

Take Apple for example. It's one of the biggest brand names in the world and they make iPhones in china. All of them. We don't take them as cheap crap because they keep quality standards very high for that exact reason.

The iFixit kit is a ripoff. You can get much better quality for less money. I know they pay you, but it's kind of painful to see you push them as a quality product so much.

Well, they aren't crap from the looks of it and they sell it as a whole experience, with fixing guides and stuff. And they aren't that stupid expensive either. The Mako kit, 64 with bits for 30€ (or 30 bucks) is pretty reasonable. Unless you break them by smashing them with a hammer, you'll have them for a lifetime. For which, 30€ is nothing.

IMO Quality tools like ifixit are worth the premium price as they should save you time and frustration.  I learned this very quickly when I was a teenager working on cars, computers, house projects, etc with inexpensive crappy tools that broke, stripped nuts and bolts and generally made for frustration and wasting time.  

 

It's better to buy 4 quality tools that will last a lifetime and perform well than 16 crappy tools that break or dont fit right or frustrate you.  Cheers!
