NSA makes powerful tool open-source

The National Security Agency develops advanced hacking tools in-house for both offense and defense—which you could probably guess even if some notable examples hadn't leaked in recent years. But on Tuesday at the RSA security conference in San Francisco, the agency demonstrated Ghidra, a refined internal tool that it has chosen to open source. And while NSA cybersecurity advisor Rob Joyce called the tool a "contribution to the nation’s cybersecurity community" in announcing it at RSA, it will no doubt be used far beyond the United States.

You can't use Ghidra to hack devices; it's instead a reverse engineering platform used to take "compiled," deployed software and "decompile" it. In other words, it transforms the ones and zeros that computers understand back into a human-readable structure, logic, and set of commands that reveals what the software you churn through it does. Reverse engineering is a crucial process for malware analysts and threat intelligence researchers, because it allows them to work backward from software they discover in the wild—like malware being used to carry out attacks—to understand how it works, what its capabilities are, and who wrote it or where it came from. Reverse engineering is also an important way for defenders to check their own code for weaknesses, and confirm that it works as intended.

This can actually useful for some purposes out there that isn’t malicious, I still don’t understand why they massed it t ope-source, something like this with the wrong hands could be bad.

Similar reverse engineering products already exist on the market, including a popular disassembler and debugger called IDA. But Joyce emphasized that the NSA has been developing Ghidra for years, with its own real-world priorities and needs in mind, which makes it a powerful and particularly usable tool. Products like IDA also cost money, whereas making Ghidra open source marks the first time that a tool of its caliber will be available for free—a major contribution in training the next generation of cybersecurity defenders. (Like other open source code, though, expect it to have some bugs.) Joyce also noted that the NSA views the release of Ghidra as a sort of recruiting strategy, making it easier for new hires to enter the NSA at a higher level, or for cleared contractors to lend their expertise without needing to first come up to speed on the tool.

This is actually pretty smart if they are using it to recruit people. There’s plenty of people with unused talent out there, this maybe their chance to prove themselves.

Open sourcing something like this doesnt really DO a whole lot. Mostly because tools like this already existed, and even if they do exist the knowledge on how to use any of the results is very difficult. Basically the people who actually could do anything with the data, already have access to the data if they really wanted it. Its cool that they open sourced it because thats always a step in the right direction but the actual impact of something like this is pretty minimal.

Isn't reverse engineering programs illegal in some case, and pretty much violates most software EULA?

It makes quite a bit difference.

IDA is probably the most popular decompiler, and that costs 1900 dollars for a single license (there is a free version but it has lots of limitations, such as only supporting 32bit applications).

All of a sudden people can legally get a free program to play around with, without having to spend 1900 dollars on something they might not have any use for.

 

It being open source also mean that people could fork it or do other things with it, potentially making it better.

Or help companies like Hex-Rays to improve their products by comparing NSA's way of dealing with things to their own.

 

Plus, now that a free and open source alternative exists companies like Hex-Rays needs to work even harder to make their products worthwhile.

Why pick their tool for thousands of dollars when a free one exists?

 

 

 

I should probably note that it doesn't seem like Ghidra is open source yet. I downloaded the package from the website (ghidra-sre.org) and it's full of precompiled binaries, and no source. There is a link to a Github repo on the website, but there is no source in the repo either. It does however say "This repository is a placeholder for the full open source release. Be assured efforts are under way to make the software available here".

 

I think it's very unwise to download and run a program from the NSA.

It's best to wait for the real release.

It is. But it can be used legally too, kind of like torrents.

But the NSA is above the law.

 

Also, it really pisses me off that it's illegal. We made it illegal to put "warranty void if removed" stickers on things, but peeking inside the software you have bought is illegal? Come on...

I should probably note that it doesn't seem like Ghidra is open source yet. I downloaded the package from the website (ghidra-sre.org) and it's full of precompiled binaries, and no source. There is a link to a Github repo on the website, but there is no source in the repo either. It does however say "This repository is a placeholder for the full open source release. Be assured efforts are under way to make the software available here".

 

I think it's very unwise to download and run a program from the NSA.

It's best to wait for the real release.

Completely agree with this, but can you decompile hex’s with this decompile?

One of the benefits of them releasing this open-source is the ability of the community to find holes and security flaws with the design.  There has already been an issue discovered when Ghidra is run in debug mode.  When debug mode is enabled, Ghidra by default listens on all interfaces using port 18001.  The flaw is easily fixed by changing one line of code.

Since it’s a external hack that downloads the files from else where, I was able to find where it downloads the said files and requested the files to be downloaded to my computer instead of temporarily holding them on the program itself. This is gonna be fun to show to the community. I’m not saying what game yet just so I can keep this on the low but it’s gonna be a fuck fest soon.

This should be good Im already imagining the insane amount of lawsuits that companies will get into over people using this. On the other hand drm can now go die in a hole because it won't matter pirates will just reverse engineer the game and take out the drm. Also couldn't this really hurt our copy right laws with regards to allowing reverse engineering basically going away completely soon?

Reverse engineering in itself can't be made illegal in any meaningful, i.e. enforceable, way. However, its relevant (i.e., commercial) uses can easily be.

yeah i'd keep that on the low. people need to use tools for more legit reasons and pay for the stuff that costs lol. even though that probably wont happen.
