Pixel 3 / Pixel 4 / S10 / iPhone X / iPhone XR

Go to solution Solved by Darkseth,

For stock, how about Nova Launcher?

Otherwise, there is not really much of an issue. I switched form Samsung Experience (S7 Edge) to a Oneplus 6T (nearly stock like software). Aside from some Looks, it's all the same. Notifications look different, Icons look different, Menü has different colors, and maybe slightly different places where some settings are - you get used to it.

For Launcher: Nova Launcher Prime ^^

Installing a stock Custom Rom on a Samsung phone.. i don't like that - at least if it's the Exynos Model. Samsung doesn't give out source codes for their stuff, so.. Camera will NOT be as good as @ Stock.

If you buy Samsung, use their (sometimes really awesome) features.

If you really absolutely don't want a non-stock Android, you're stuck to Pixel (Oneplus is a cheaper Option, but a bit worse Camera (better with GCam Port, but still doesn't reach Pixel 3 Level), no official IP Rating, but according to most, better Performance than Pixel 3/XL).

iPhone Xr: Check it out if it really is an issue with the Display beeing LCD.

iPhone X: "Old"... Well, even a Pixel 4 (will be 2 years "newer" than iPhone X when it comes out) will not get longer updates than iPhone X.

It's a year old, but you will probably feel no difference to the Xs, and comparing to Android... it will still get longer updates then EVERY single Android that exists right now.

It will still serve you well many years.

Pixel 4: Interesting, as long Google doesn't fuck up.. i'm actually scared they will stick to 4gb... again.... (pls no... it was questionable on the Pixel 2 already...). For the time beeing, you could help yourself with a Oneplus 6/6t for the time beeing, since don't lose value that much.

Hello,

I've been looking for a new phone for the past 4 months since my Nexus 5X (it's been almost 3 years since I bought it) is dying:
- I broke the charger accidentally while I was trying to "fix" it since (when I plugged it into the wall), it started charging and then stopped and then started and stopped;
- SIM card doesn't work (can't even make calls or send messages; get's stuck and reboots whenever I put my SIM in it) because of water;
- Power button doesn't work anymore (probably because of water too);
- Battery charges slowly (since it's charging on my PC);
- It's slow and outdated.

I currently have Android 9 installed on my phone and I really love it, even though it's somewhat slow. Never used iOS but would like to try it.

Here's the things that I need in a phone:

Hardware:
- No hardware issues;
- Water resistant (at least IP67);
- Great speakers;
- Great camera (the amount of cameras doesn't matter, only has to be good);
- Fingerprint scanner and/or Face ID (or whatever you call it on Android);
- Good batery (has to last me one full day without that much of a heavy usage);
- At least 64 GB of storage (I don't need an SD card slot but would be nice if it included one);
- Great build quality (Glass, metal/stainless steel/alluminum; between 145g and 190g);
- Good design and no wasted space;
- OLED screen preferbly (at least 350ppi; at least 450 nits);

Software:
- Easy/updated software (stock Android/iOS);
- Great performance/no lag;

Other:
- Device popularity in Portugal (I know, that's weird but yeah);

I don't really care about:
- Headphone jack (as long as there's a provided USB-C to Headphone jack in the box or USB-C headphones);
- AI;

Because of this, I've been looking at the following phones (in order):

Google Pixel 3 (Negatives: 4GB RAM; Device popularity in Portugal; Display doesn't get as bright as I would like) - 8/10;
Google Pixel 4 (Negatives: Will have to wait; Device popularity in Portugal) - 9/10;
Samsung Galaxy S10 (Negatives: Software; Speakers and camera are almost similar but better in the Pixel (imo) - 9/10;
iPhone XR (Negatives: Display (LCD); Fingerprint not available; Speakers) (50/50: Software is very different from Android and I'm afraid I won't get used to it) - 8/10;
iPhone X (Negatives: "old"; Fingerprint not available; Speakers) (50/50: Software is very different from Android and I'm afraid I won't get used to it) - 9/10;

I'm gonna buy the phone in august or september but wouldn't mind waiting a bit more.

I hope you can help me decide which phone I should buy as I'm very confused.
Thanks!

Sounds like the S10e would be good for you. Just get the 256GB model so you get 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB on the 128GB version so it'll run a bit better for a bit longer.

PIxel 3 has been having issues and is kind of laggy right now. Pixel 2 xl's are great and pretty cheap now that the 3 is released.

Thanks. What about the software though? Can I install stock android on it? I'm more like a stock dude ;)

Hey, what kind of issues (just curious)? I can get the Pixel 3 for as low as 600 euros (678 dollars) brand new.

People are saying it's laggy compared to other phones. There's also some software bugs which you can see in Linus' review. They might be fixed now but I know a lot of people are complaining about it being laggy. Also the notch on the 3XL looks horrible but that doesn't bother some people.

I also don't like that notch... if I choose a phone by google I'll choose the regular Pixel 3. What about the Pixel 4 (I know it's early), iPhones?

Eh, I'm not a fan of iPhones at all. If you've been with android most of the I wouldn't switch. the S10 might be good for you. However with Samsung phones after a few years they get super slow and the battery gets pretty bad. I see people all the time complaining about their s5, s6, or some s7's getting slow and they end up switching to iPhones because they had a bad experience with older android phones.

I mean, 64GB is probably more than I would ever need. I have all my apps and games installed with only 16GB. Then again, I wish I had the hardware of both Samsung and iPhone combined into Pixel 3 software with the gestures of the iPhone xD

Wellll, if you like the gestures of the iphone and really good software, Oneplus phones are pretty good, not sure if you can get them where you are. I have a 6t with 8gb of ram and it's fantastic. The screen resolution is only 1080p and the fingerprint reader isn't the greatest but after using it for a while it works pretty fast. Setting the animation to the mclaren edition one speeds it up somehow, people say this might be from the animation putting out more light. It meets most of the criteria you have. The only things that aren't great are: the camera, but the gcam port from the pixel makes the pictures a lot better. Speaker is bottom firing and sounds ok. The software is mostly stock but adds a few features and makes the dark mode go across apps unlike the pixel. There's no water resistance rating but people have put the phone in water for 10 minutes and it's been fine. And the ceo of oneplus says it can handle a bit of water. I trust that it's fairly water resistant but there's no rating probably to save cost. I mean the phone starts at 550$ and has 128gb of storage, and comes with a very fast 20w charger.

Damn that looks sick! The lack of wireless charging, IP67, speakers and camera (though I can fix that with that port you just mentioned) really makes me step back but one more to add to the list of phones considering to buy! Also, it costs 500 euros on my country....

The gcam port has some glitches but it's usable. I would just use it for pictures you really want to look good. Like if you have time to sit there for a minute and use it. It's a little bit unreliable. But even without the port the regular camera app is pretty good. And oneplus should release updates to make it better.

Thanks very much! I might ask one of my friends to give me her/his iPhone for a while so I can check if I like the software. Again, gonna buy the phone in some months so I'll have plenty of time to choose ;)

Well, the iPhone X at the moment costs 1200 euros so certainly not cheap... I'm sure I can get a cheaper one but I've been looking out for that and minimum I saw was 1000 euros. Honestly, I just "don't" want a Pixel device because of gestures and device popularity in my country (which could actually be a good thing since it's something new and fresh but idk)...

Then there is 1 huge Argument for the S10: In a few months, there will be a few 100 bucks down already. So you will most likely find a Galaxy S10 (not the e... the regular S10) for 600-650 bucks instead of 800-900~, i bet.

Pixel smartphones are way too stable in their price (because Android can be replaced).

iPhones stay at the same price for 12 Months, then new ones come out :P Pretty much. But if you resale them, they hold their value like Diamonds lol.

OnePlus 6T, or Galaxy S10e/S10

OneUI improves many problems, and is more future proof compared to the old and laggy TouchWiz, and Samsung Experience.

iPhone's are for, if you're really into Apple's ecosystem.

Android is more for Customisation, and Samsung offers the most (I can teach any, if you'd like to get more customisation on your Galaxy, running 8.0,or higher, for those that don't know what GoodLock/BadLock is).

OnePlus are solid, cheaper devices than both Samsung and Pixel, and they do offer a bit more customisation than Pixel's stock Android.

OnePlus also has their devices running on Stock Android, but it's sort of a modified one, called Oxygen OS.

Still, Imo if you ask me, Samsung holds the crown for the most customisation.

Gonna point to this as a hint that you might want an iPhone.

Phones with stock or near-stock Android tend to get updates relatively quickly, but they still don't hold a candle to iOS.  It's still wild to me that you don't really get more than two years of non-security updates on Android phones, and that people just accept that they'll get the latest version of Android half a year after Google releases it.  Meanwhile, on the iOS side, everyone can update virtually the millisecond a new version hits the servers, and they typically get four or five years of support.

And performance-wise... well, let's put it this way: I upgraded from an iPhone 7 to an XS because of the screen and cameras, not because the performance was sub-par.  iPhones are generally faster than their Android equivalents, and with newer generations there hasn't been much of a slow-down as newer iOS versions show up.

That happens with most phones it's not an exclusive problem. New software just isn't made for older devices.
