you should start by turning off caps lock..

but yes, you can, it'll most likely not perform optimally but it wont absolutely crawl either.

that said, dont touch stuff like ZFS, or its advanced features.

I'd go for NAS4FREE as its a forked version designed for lower ram amounts. Worked well for me

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

How old? IIRC FreeNAS is x64 only now, so an old PC (3GB of RAM might signal a 32bit system) might not work.

IT WILL "WORK" JUST DO NOT EXPECT GOOD PERFORMANCE. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN PLEX ON IT AND PROTOCOLS LIKE SMB MAY GO SLOWER AS WELL.

3GB RAM should be well into the 64 bit era. they may have had 32 bit windows installed, but they supported 64.

(or to put a timeframe on it, about 2004 is when 64 bit gained traction, and at that time "gigabytes" of ram was considered high end.)
