USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Rebranding

Macrumors article

USB 3.2 (20Gbps) has been rebranded to USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, while also rebranding USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) to USB 3.2 Gen 2, and rebranding USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Which was USB 3 prior to the EARLIER rebrand) into USB 3.2 Gen 1.

(Table in description might make that make more sense. Originally from Tom’s Hardware, shown in MacRumors article.)

Who put George Lucas in charge of the naming department?

Boy, I can’t wait to see this explanation on the WAN show.

Is it going to need 2 3.1 gen 2 10gbps ports and gets tied into 1 bonded cable?

thats what the name makes it look like

slightly understand the 2x2 stuff, as is is just technically 2 10Gbps connections slapped together, instead of an evolution.

But who cares? 3, 3.1, and 3.2 would’ve sufficed. Agreed.

it will use both sides of usb type c for the "2x2" 20Gbps instead of just being a reversible cable

It sounds like it’s essentially internally bonded inside the wire? It’s basically just a technicality, saying “Well, it’s not really a new standard, so we can’t call it 3.2 without qualifications.”

Except they could. No one would be upset.

I was actually thinking of making a topic of this myself, it frustrates me to no end.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Oh for f***s sake!   As if the whole thing with 87 variants of USB-C wasn't complicated enough already.

Screw this, I'm going back to USB 2.0.

It's like Intel saying "you are right, all this i9, i7 with no HT, etc is confusing. Therefore, we are renaming our older CPUs!" :D

Guys, I need real ideas here. Come on. We've got to make USB 3 less confusing.

What if we... obfuscated it further?

...Someone give this man a promotion!

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Sigh. This sucks. I know why companies want to be able to bullshit their way into misleading consumers into pretending to support new standards that they don't actually support, but like fuck you. This is exactly why the standards organization is supposed to exist. to PREVENT this sort of bullshit.

Tired of the USB-IF being walked all over. Get off your ass and stand for something.

Here's a thought for the intelligent ones developing this.

USB  3.2 Gen 1. -  USB 3

USB  3.2 Gen 2. -  USB 4

USB  3.2 Gen 2x2. -  USB 5

Now when buying something it's sometimes Plug and Pray as to what speed it's going to run.

fun fact: USB-C 2.0 cables exist!

source: I bought one to power a camera with a portable battery

Connector is not the same as the  standard. (And I don't have a problem with that) You can have any connector with any USB standard. Even  USB 1.0 on USB-C

One of my gripes was that most phones with Type-C were actually just the garden variety USB 3.0 (or 3.1 Gen 1).     And I was in the mode of trying to push video streaming from a PC to the Gear VR.  So wanted the most bandwidth possible.
