Where is everyone staying? Looking for places.

Hey guys! My tickets are purchased. I am still looking for a place to stay. What is everyone else doing? What area are you all staying in? This will be our first time going to Canada so I am pretty lost. It will be my son, sister, and I. I would love to have a view of the water, but it looks like that is the most expensive option. I would also like to be in a safe area. The Canadian stereotype is that everyone in Canada is really nice, so I don't know if there is a dangerous place. Thanks!

So hotels and Airbnb are starting to go up in price as people are reserving. I went the Hostel route and picked up 4 nights for about $260 total and that was renting a whole twin room to myself. They have triple and quads too. I got lucky to get a Hostel that's 5-10 min walk to the con center. Check out hostels.com that's where I booked mine. Make sure to check rules before booking some hostels have underage restrictions

I have a party of three and ended up going with an AirBnB that is about a 10 minute drive away.  The cost was right at $100 per night.  That was far cheaper than the hotels near the convention center which all showed $400 to $600 per night when I looked.

4 of us went for an AirBNB about a 20 minute drive from the venue. $230 altogether for 2 nights for a 1 bedroom.

AirBNB seems the best bet. I will start looking for outside of Vancouver.

I had thought about Surrey. I need to pull up google maps and see how close it is to the venue. I want to stay a couple of extra days to really see and do Vancouver since we are already spending a lot of money and haven't been to Canada before.

I had thought about Surrey. I need to pull up google maps and see how close it is to the venue. I want to stay a couple of extra days to really see and do Vancouver since we are already spending a lot of money and haven't been to Canada before. 

It's about 40 minutes from the venue with traffic but if you're doing a tour it's close to LMG HQ. We're also staying from the 24th to the 29th so it seemed like a better base of operations to explore the vancouver and surrounding area.

Yeah, I went the crazy route and got 4 nights in the holiday inn downtown. Hotels are expensive but I'm traveling alone for the first time I feel safer with a regulated hotel and I wanted to be downtown. It helped that I was able to save about $600 on it with their IHG point credit card program but it still was $1,000. It's more than my rent for a month but this is also a once in a lifetime sort of trip for me so I decided I don't want a shared bathroom.

i got an air bnb 15 minutes away in gastown seems like a nice enough place for $500

I managed to get a private twin room at the Cambie Hostel, 10 min from the convention.

If anyone is looking I have the room for only me and wouldn't mind splitting cost. It was just under 200 for Fri, Sat, Sun nights.

I'd stay in Vancouver, Burnaby, or Richmond if you're looking to explore Vancouver. Surrey's a bit away even if you have a car.

Do not stay in Surrey if you're looking to stay somewhere safe. Also avoid anywhere within say 4 blocks of East Hastings, until you reach Burnaby.

New Westminster isn't a place I'd stay either. At night it can be a bit sketchy.

If you're looking at Google Maps for Vancouver proper, I would avoid:

• Anywhere north of Prior/Venabales/East Hastings
• Downtown Eastside
• Strathcona
• Grandview-Woodland, South Vancouver, Sunset, Marpole are all so-so, not bad, not great

Other than that it's pretty safe all around. 49th and points south can be a little rough around Knight St.

Granville, Yaletown, Davie, Commercial Drive are night life areas, so you'll deal with drunks during evening hours.

If you stay on the North Shore (might be cheaper), keep in mind the Seabus times.

Specifically we have 2 days in north Vancouver, one day in langley, and 3 days in gastown.

Haha, ah yes, that's totally different. Though depending how close you are to Hastings, Gastown is the worst part of Vancouver.

Not a great idea. You'll get arrested. If you're in Stanley Park, you'd have to go deep enough that you'd also be beside the other homeless people in the park. Again, not the safest idea

Debatable. Literally all the homeless/drug addicts in Vancouver are crammed into a 2 or 3 block radius.

Avoid the intersection of Main and Hastings at all costs. Unless you have a real "don't fuck with me" look.

If you stay in the hotel, maybe. That hotel is in Whalley, one of the worst parts of Surrey. The Surrey mayor once said "Air One (the RCMP helicopter used for the entire Lower Mainland) might as well be ours, it never leaves Whalley/Newton."

 

Avoid the skytrain at night. Surrey Central has one of the highest rates of disturbances.

@PrincessHeinz57 If you like ice cream, a place to definitely go check out is La Casa Gelato. They have something like 260 flavors on offer at once, and a catalog of over 500. It's pretty packed in the summer, but they offer small spoon samples of any flavor before you buy. It's a must stop place IMO.
