Upgrade Plan - Recommendations Welcome

sooo...a buddy of mine has this rig we built together for him some like 7-8 years ago or so, doesnt matter youll see by the specs

and i was thinking about what would be a good upgrade path for him and would like some input from you guys.

budget is kinda tight. we havent taked about it yet but lets just go for bang for buck here. also im leaning towards getting used parts, maybe  a generation or to behind 

 

his specs right now:

AMD FX-8120  (yeah that one, the fake 8 core one we were stupid enough to get :D)

some mobo idont remember (we had to grad a used one fast when his original board did, all i know is it doesnt even have sata3)

8gb ddr3 memory (corsair i believe, doesnt matter i guess)

asus 970 turbo (wouldnt have been my choice but the price on a refurbished one was to good to pass up and he really needed to replace the original gtx 560ti)

some 750 watt psu i believe 

and a wd blue 500gb for his only drive

all in a bitfenix neos

 

looking at it i have no idea how he lives with that but weirdly hes not complaining yet. still i thought id give him a game plan on what we could do.

so i was thinking new cpu + mobo + ram + (ssd) should do the trick again used hardware is totally fine and preffered if it means more performance for the dollar (or euro in this case)

 

right now im thinking 

i5 8400

some 370 board (i dont think it really matters that much)

and 8-16 gigs of ram

 

but i also have an old z270i from msi laying around so if i found a 7700 or maybe even k i could re-use that save him some bucks and get rid of it from my closet.

 

idk i havent really kept up with how cpus perform ever since i got my 7700k

man I got the older X600 series Ryzen 5 and I can guarantee he'll be more than happy with it. recommend it over the 2600 if you go for a X370 board though since X370 boards need a bios update to operate 2k series Ryzen. else go for a 2k series and a X470 board. I went from an i7 5960X to my Ryzen5 1600 and don't feel much of any difference in any of the tasks I do, increase in speed to some tasks (guessing ram speeds have smth to do with that since my Asus Deluxe X99 wouldn't run my 3200 Mhz ram at XMP) He'll most definitely love Ryzen
