The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 can now be bought for $279 US on Newegg as mentioned in a press release by AMD. It’s no surprise that the price cut comes just a few hours before NVIDIA is going to introduce their new GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card at the same MSRP of $279 US.

My thoughts:

I'd take 1070 ti level performance for 280$, blower or not, I hope they will have AIB cards at 310$, as the stock blower 56 is loud, However, this is definitely great, especially considering that the 3 free games that you get (Div. 2, DMC5, RE2) are AAA new games, which you can sell for at least 20$ each, which essentially makes it a 2060, for 150$ less (if you sell the games) I'm definitely considering this, even though I already am getting 2 free games (Div 2 & DMC5)

This will knock the 1660 ti out of the water, unless the buyer considers power efficency to be a major deciding factor.

Lowering the power limit on a 56 to something like 180-200W, undervolting, underclocking 100-200mhz, and its basically a 1660 ti, but with the option to reset it to normal clocks, and get faster speeds.

TLDR: Vega 56 will be 280$, to combat 1660 ti. 2060 performance for 70$ less.

Not sure if linking other channels vids here is ok or not, so I'll simply say that GamersNexus put their 1660 review up with numbers, and included the Vega 56 and 2060, 2070 and 1060, 1070 in the review charts with it, saying expect 1070 performance in pretty much everything.

Contemplating a 1050 for a server build and a 1660 for a more desktop and light gaming build, which I can later move the 1660 and its lower power use to something else once Navi hits and either it is better or the prices come down on the 2070.

Unfortunately this only applies to ONE specific model (it's an MSI). that has been discounted for a limited time. It's not all models, just the one. Also it's a model that in many countries are (supposedly) sold out.

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

Not suprised.. The Vega series was kind of a flop, but it had all of those flops.

The same MSI Air boost vega 56 blower card was $279 on Newegg US, wow newegg CA really doesn't keep up on prices lol.

It appears that the price drop is temporary and only applies to that single card. So no, the MSRP isn't being dropped to $279. At this point, whether new stock will be available or not is even up in the air it seems. I disagree with Jay's point that no one got the card for that much, but the pricing also hasn't been pushed to a majority of cards (or literally any other cards for that matter).

02/25/19 [Update from GamersNexus]:

AMD has clarified that the RX Vega 56's price will not in fact be lowered. The $279 MSI reference card is alone in this respect.

It's not "extremely" hot, and if it's out of your comfort zone, you can either undervolt or watercool. The former only requiring the base driver to do, and is quite effective.

Because it'd still be worlds better than the old "crap" I currently have damn it. Had it been priced the same as US, it would've been a relatively good deal as it compete with the 1070 just fine....
But then again, blower style cooler are loud and garbage(IMO) so if I add on the cost of a new cooler, it would've been more economical to just get the $400 CAD 1660. (Yay import/duty taxes on electronics... and bad US to CAD ratio)

This.

Current industry estimates are that the GPU and HBM by itself for Vega 56 costs around 300 dollars. It is simply IMPOSSIBLE to sell this card at 280 dollars and not lose money.

Not on price, there are 1070's for around $300 and the 1660Ti is faster than a 1070 in some games.

That cooler is garbage, after spending on watercooling you may as well get a Vega 64. And not many are going to mess with undervolting stuff, most just turn the OC sliders up and wonder why their card is hot.

Am I the only one who cares about the fact that the Vega 56 consumes like 130W more than the 1660Ti while still performing worse?

Vega 56 performs worse than the 1660Ti you say?

Not to harp on or anything but would be nice if statements about products were more factually correct. Power, sure, performance, no.

On a personal note I couldn't give a damn if the Vega 56 used 600W alone, in fact I'd apply the mods that allow it to. I'd do the same to an Nvidia card if they'd let me.

And the option to boost the power limit up by 242% and match a (iirc) RTX 2070 :P

The 1660Ti doesn't even compete in the same price range, 1440p is a weird test when IMO anyway, there is more chance someone buying it will game at 1080p.

But personally I wouldn't want to make a card consume 600w alone, at 600w watts either card would be a loud space heater, with much higher chance of failure with no warranty, any money I'd save over a vega64 would just go into buying a high end PSU.

And wow lol, hwunboxed still uses exaggerated graphs with no lines.
