Sending email via powershell

So I'm new to Java but am working on a Lab in my class where we are to send an email to our professor through Java without using the Javamail API. 

I would like to do this though powershell commands issued through Java. Im really only familiar with vb.net at the time so if anyone knows some good places to point me to get started with this sort of thing it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd imagine the purpose of this lab is to learn about sockets and to implement the functionality by yourself.
