HP Omen x35 or Alienware AW3418HW

Dahnark

HP Omen X35:

  • 1440p
  • 100Hz
  • VA
  • 630€ / $715

Alienware AW3418HW

  • 1080p
  • 160Hz
  • IPS
  • 780€ / $885

Actually, I am using (1 day really) the HP Omen X35 and it is not convincing me a lot.

  • 1440p, really I think I can't see difference respect my old 1080p monitor, I just got lower performance in games

  • 100Hz, it is amazing after using 60Hz for a long time, even in the windows desktop, using 60 fps now ugly.

  • My old panel was a Samsung, I think it was TN, but the colors of that panel are better than the HP Omen. I tried to replicate them using NVIDIA panel but they are still different.

If your gaming at 1440p then you have no choice but to get the HP Omen but if you game at 1080p then you simply grab the Alienware and enjoy IPS on top of that as icing on the cake.

I have a  Samsung 27' TN 1080p 60Hz and I am testing the HP Omen X35 35' VA 1440p 100Hz and I didn't see the difference in resolutions when I have them together.

I only see that HP Omen has muted colors than the Samsung and I love the 100Hz of Omen.

That is the question, should I move from 1440p VA 100Hz to 1080p IPS 160Hz?

I don't recommend degrading your resolution of 1440p just to get IPS.  Now if it was 1440p IPS then fine that makes sense, but there is a nice noticeable difference between 1080p gaming and 1440p gaming.  There however isn't a big of a difference one you go from 1440p to 4k.  Things just get a tad bit smaller and no jaggies.  Once you use all AA methods in nv panel and set in game to max and 1440p you don't see any jaggies.  Also right now the only card that can handle 4k is the 2080Ti ….. nothing else until we see the performance of the 7nm AMD card.

Really the colors of this monitor are awful, I can't get a good calibration after hours and a lot of tries.

A bit confusing question that is put, but from what I understand... Why not get aw3418dw? 120hz, 3440:1440p and IPS? Not much of a price diff from your listed monitors and it is the best choice here. As for Omen, I personally hate the VA panels, so your eyes might just not like the colors etc of it like mine. Had same experience where TN felt better than VA, so paid a bit more and got IPS.

Ya IPS shines in angle viewing.  Heck I see different shades of color from the top of my monitor to the bottom lol,  side to side sux big time as well.  My thing is Im waiting for the Samsung 49" 5120x1440 QLED HDR Freesync 2 and 120hz.  It is a VA panel but I hope the angle viewing is better so I don't see different colors depending where my head and eye balls are.

But IPS has issues too, like bleeding and poor latency in gaming.

Aw3418DW has one of the lowest input lags. Many things come into latency, and even many TN and VA panels have higher than IPS. All depends on the panel itself. As for bleeding etc, yea.. Kind of a lottery so best is to go with best QA, to make sure it is checked well in factory. Dell has one of the best ones from what I read. But sure, if no rush why not wait for that beastly samsung monitor :)
