Pie on the S9 forces it into a long press to open mode by default now. So most of the issue with it has disappeared.

I feel like this information is better suited to be included in the news post about the launch of the S10 lineup, because otherwise one could also argue that for example the S10 dropping the notification LED is something that could be a thread in the Tech News subforum...

The Verge are useless. Their goal is make as many Vids as possible, not to do Facts.

No you cannot make the button do whatever you want.

The button has 2 actions, you can only configure 1 of the 2 actions, the other remains Bixby.

So for example, if you set that when you press the button, it opens the camera app (say), then press-and-hold will be Bixby button (no choice).

You can't have press-and-hold be assigned to something else. It has to be Bixby,

Activator on my good old jailbroken 3GS absolutely murders the functionality of Android devices. Activator is actually the biggest thing I miss from iPhone.

 

If you don't know what Activator is, basically any action or button on your device can do just about anything you can think of. Almost infinite possibilities. Double press this button to do this, triple press this button to do this, double press these two buttons together to do this, tap and hold this portion of the screen to do this, double tap this icon to do this, hold this button for this many seconds to do this, inserting headphones does this, plugging out the charger does this, etc. etc. etc.

 

So yeah, the Bixby button just makes me sad.

oh cool so i can press a button on my new S10 and get a new 2080TI? sweet!

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Samsung Galaxy S series phones have a fourth button on the side. This fourth button is used as the Bixby button, Samsung's very own Digital Assistance.

While other phones on the market allows you to configure that fourth button to do something else, on Samsung phones you can't make it do anything else. It has to be the Bixby button. If I am not mistaken last year or so, you could choose to disable the button and do nothing. But that was all.

 

Consumers have been asking Samsung to allow them to configure that fourth button to run apps or do actions on their phones for a number of years. However, Samsung who is spending billions on Bixby, wants Bixby to be used.

 

Personally, I think the the fourth button should be put at the ear edge of the phone, and be a 2 step button, so that it can be a camera launcher button / take picture (so that you don't shake the screen as you tap the screen to take a picture, and hold the phone as a camera for a better, more comfortable hold) when fully pressed down and auto-focus on partially pressed. Considering that premium phones big selling features is the camera... (you will not find a phone with mid-specs but excellent premium phone camera).  I never understood why camera feature is not put at the forefront with features like this. But that is a different topic.

i honestly have no problems with bixby as long as it doesn't open on one click, i heard you can change this to 2 clicks.

They act like people use digital assistants lol. The only person I have met that has used Siri from day 1 is blind. Otherwise the novelty of talking to a computer goes away real fast on the 5th time repeating yourself looking like an idiot in public talking to your wrist for your hemorrhoid appointment.
