They say Samsung QLED is a gimmick, I say i9 9900k is a gimmick

Ok before everyone or owners of 9900k jump on me you got the wrong idea.  I love the 9900k and what it brings to the table for my beautiful Linus people.  8 cores 16 threads of 9th gen 5Ghz madness.  Here is where I say that if you call Samsung QLED a gimmick and OLED the real thing then I think 9900k is a gimmick as Intel has seen a huge ammount of their customers game on their machine.  So they call the 9900k a gamers dream CPU.  That is utter BS.  I have a 7 year old rig and many Linus people have older rigs and games run just fine on them.  Heck when I play AAA titles my avg cpu usage is 40 percent.  Of course it uses and sees all 12 threads and puts a little load on each of them but I play the heaviest VRAM usage game in Quake Champions takes up 7.8GB of VRAM where other AAA titles except for BF take up 4GB of ram or so.  The gamers CPU is a way for them to pull in customers.  Their gen before this like 7980XE or 8700k are perfectly fine for gaming and you wont miss a frame.  See the CPU only needs to do certain work then the rest falls on the GPU.  CPU just does calculations and AI and what not.  Once your CPU is powerful enough it doesnt matter if you have a 9900k special edition with 12 cores the frame rate is going to be the same.  The GPU is giving its all and will reach a certain fps ya know.  Basically once again God bless 9900k owners you are all lucky enjoy it,. But just know its not just a gaming CPU ... lol what a joke to call it that.  It can do video editing and 3d shit and DAW and breeze through it at 5Ghz 16 threads of i9 goodness.  Any this is my rant that a 9900k is not a gamers CPU,, Its everyones CPU.  Intel decided to target .... as they see theres milions and millions of gamers out there.  So how catchy to come out with a new sick CPU and call it the gamers CPU.  Anyhow Im done and it you read this far then you have done a good job.

Just because the cpu isn't maxed out usage wise doesn't mean a faster cpu won't help you. The system can still be waiting for the cpu, and a faster cpu will decrease the time the system is waiting for the cpu.

I wouldn't go so far as to say 6-7 year old cpus are up to the task, as I have real-game results that show otherwise (upgraded from an i7 3930k), but you are right in that calling it a gamer's cpu is a gimmick. It's much more than that and it's definitely overkill for just gaming, the 8700K is closer to ideal and a much better price to performance ratio.

what about flagship products arent a gimmick? just about every flagship smartphone these days is basicly a gimmick platform (did we REALLY need edge to edge displays, and a freaking hole for a camera?), flagship monitors.. dont see many people use those do we? flagship GPU's.. how many titans did nvidia sell? (okay.. bad example, i actually sold a pair of titans to a client due to lack of 1080Ti's), what about VR hasnt been a gimmick for now? and honestly.. even outside of computers..

 

my parents are in the kitchen business, every time a "revolutionary new thing" launches.. it's a freaking gimmick and a half..

 

the reason why, however, these "gimmick" products arent such a terrible thing.. is that because they drive innovation. intel's marketing team is having a stroke, yes, i agree. but seeing extreme competitiveness in the CPU space only means the sensible people like you and i will eventually pick the fruits of that gimmick-soil that was "deposited" all over.

 

Case in point, once again from the kitchen industry: few years back: "revolutionary new thing, extracting hoods that circulate air, so you save on your heating bill" and they were a HILAREOUS gimmick, like you have bolted a jet engine to your kitchen roof.. few product generations later.. they're actually a notable option for the mainstream.

 

PS: on the topic of cpu's and game performance.. HIGHLY dependant on the game, like actually black and white levels of difference.

True Electornics WIzardy my friend.  Regardless my last few words on the OP is its a phenomel CPU but its just wrong to name it a gaming CPU,, it is a Everything CPU ,, autocad, photoshop, premiere, 3d max, Maya , and DAW which I use, and my mouth waters at the 9900k ........ But Im waiting to get my first gaming monitor when it comes out in a month or so,, the Samsung 49" QLED HDR 5120x1440 120hz.  Im willing to pay up to 1800 dollars knowing the price may fall a bit.  I don't care tho Ive been living in 60hz world ever since my Sony CRT FW900 retired on me after 10 years.  80hz was beautiful for desktop smoothness and gaming was soo smooth no motion blur ,, bring back CRT lol

Oh I don't know, the way Ubisoft are going we will need a 9900k to run the next Assassins Creed game.

I upgraded from an i5 4690 to an 8600k largely because I'm a huge AC fan and it was running like crap.  (before you call me mad, I did put the 4690 into my server so it wasn't purely just for AC)

Yeah my "it's time" reason for upgrading was horrid performance in Dragon Age Inquisition, I haven't played the newer games I've gotten yet because I was replaying that. 3440x1440 on that old cpu was no bueno, 45-55fps in certain areas and changing settings had no effect so I knew it wasn't the GPU (especially since I got my gsynced 100fps 100hz in other areas). 

 

Overall the upgrade was for more than just that, but that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Now I'm getting 98-100fps in the same area, same GPU, same settings. I'm a happy clam. 

 

The 3930k will live on in a system I'm putting together for my grandma cuz her old one took a crap.
