Origin Users complaining their privacy settings have been updated to "show real name" without their knowledge

Syntaxvgm

It frustrates the hell out of me that every single time i interact with a website, forum, product, app, software whatever all of the default settings are the most dangerous way they could possibly be set.  No wonder so many non-tech type people get fucked over, they buy products and use things without first changing all of the settings to be as secure and private as possible because they wrongly assume that things wouldn't ship in a potentially dangerous configuration.

It wasn't enabled for me and I didn't notice any other changes, good thing I didn't use my real name.

Yah it's basically llike a range of accounts, not all of them. I imagine it's some sort of database fuck up affecting a certain ID range.

If you don't want your real name out there, don't give it out in the first place.
As such, simply edit your profile, because it's entirely optional whether or not you provide them that information.

On Origin's website and on your profile, just click on the big orange button at the top right that says "edit on ea.com".

From there, in About Me at the top of the page, click on EDIT right beside "Basic Information" to see the screen above.

You can also choose who can see your account... Change that setting to Friends or No One to avoid having some weirdo look you up.

Yeah, well, a lot of services demand that you input a real name otherwise you can't even continue. I do have a fake persona for most, but the problem is, if you'll have to restore account or whatever by identifying yourself, you wont' be able with fake name...

Damn, now everyone will know my real name is hobo humping slobo babe.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I'm not sure how widespread this is or why it is happening, no statement from EA yet too early, but it does seem to be happening.

Oh, I see a GDPR lawsuit against EA coming up...

That might be interesting.

And expensive for EA.

A fake ID is easily created if you absolutely need one with your "fake name" on it for these services.
I have no issue lying to these mega corporation about what my real name is.
I've already had to do so for at least 2 services and they were none the wiser.

We're not talking about doing something illegal like going in a bar while underage here, these businesses have no legitimate reason to know your name whatsoever.
They just want it for advertisement purpose and other bullshit and it's 100% legal to give them a pseudonyme/fake name in most countries (like the US).
Yes they can ban your account if they figure that you've lied, but simply providing them with a picture of the fake ID with your fake name on it is good enough in most cases.

It can easily be made in photoshop with a picture of your actual ID... Change the name on it, blur out any actual Identification numbers on it because they shouldn't be getting that info in the first place(they aren't law enforcement or related to the gov in any way, meaning they shouldn't have any system to verify the ID through the number on it and would honestly just lead to ID theft if you didn't blur it out).
After that you're golden.

How is this any different then microshaft defaulting all your settings on windows 10 after a forced update? Yet people still choose to use that garbage operating system...

By the way, anyone not exclusively using gift cards to pay for purchases are exposing their identity to the platform any time the buy something regardless if your name is on the account or not.

What does windows 10 and ET have in common?

They are both constantly trying to phone home.

Guess what, Blizzard has this shit enabled by default too. They call it "ReaI ID" and I was never asked about it, it was just enabled by default. With my real fucking name. Are you companies retarded or something? Why the fuck do you think I'd want my real name to be posted online by default ffs?

On blizzard games my close friends see my real name but work college and acquaintance only see my nick. Same for steam. I don't know how it figure it out or if there is an option i clicked at one point but it's there.

I've never once had my settings reset after an update.

It was(or maybe still is, IDK) pretty common, top it off it reinstalls every single crapware app without asking..... Nowadays AFAIK  its elegantly ignores any tweaks that doesnt fit in with MS's thinking about what a user should or shouldnt do.

-Never use your real name anywhere online unless its absolutely required to like bank accounts, paypal.

-This could be a software error resetting preferences and we dont know if its intended or not.

My preferences have not been changed so it doesnt happen to everyone i guess.

mine wasn't set to that... but i also have it set so nobody can see my profile. so there's that.

This is me too.  I checked both accounts I have and both set to nobody and that box is unchecked.

I make it a habit to go through every setting tab of new accounts and make sure it's locked down to not do telemetrics, not display real information, no newsletter, etc.

I've never once had my settings reset after an update.

Of the few times where I don't clean install the new update, I've only had some graphics settings get reset, and only due to drivers.

But when it does happen, it's akin to, say, Ubuntu settings not carrying over to Debian, or one version of OSX adding/dropping/changing things under the hood.

I've yet to see anything that suggests Windows settings getting reset is a deliberate move by Microsoft, other than baseless conjecture.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.
