RUMOUR: Apple in 2019: 16-inch MacBook, 31-inch 6K display and more

Website 9to5mac has posted some information on what has to come from Apple this year

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is out with a wide-reaching new investor note this evening. Kuo says that Apple will release new iPads, a new 16-inch MacBook Pro, a 31-inch 6K monitor, iPhones with bilateral charging, and more in 2019.

 

First and foremost, Kuo says that the 2019 iPhone models will retain the same screen sizes as the iPhone XS and iPhone XR. This means we’ll get 6.5-inch, 5.8-inch, and 6.1-inch iPhones. Kuo says that all three will retain Lightning connectivity instead of USB-C.

 

I remember the 5K Apple display as a screen that's not easy to use in a non-Mac environment so I am a bit sceptical for this 6K display.

Maybe I'm wrong, and Apple have since updated their compatibility (or was it the GPU manufacturers fault?)

Probably just a 15 inch macbook with a higher screen to body ratio. Kinda like the fit a "14 inch" screen in a 13 inch blueprint with the Matebook X Pro.

Please Apple:

 

1. Make a more reliable cooling system, I don't give a shit if your Macbooks are 1mm thicker than the previous version

2. Thunderbolt 3 can stay, but can you throw in an SD card reader, and a fast UHS-II while at it?

3. Get rid of that butterfly bullcrap away

4. Throw in a bigger battery

Get rid of the fugly sounding, easily broken butterfly key switches and go back to scissor switches instead. Plus, the fact that they have to add better cooling. Remember the i9 MacBook Pro debacle? 

 Though this is Apple we’re talking about, they can’t even properly cool the Mac mini.

What's the point of 6k resolution on a screen of this size?

 

Even for "professional content creation" that's just overkill and serves no purpose but reduce battery life at this point.

Throwing out the touchbar - or even just making additional versions without it - probably won't happen, right?

IMO that could pave the way for bigger battery / better cooling, also then they could go back to the old keyboards.

 

I don't know what switches the magic keyboard uses but I'd even prefer the switch + keycap combination that the magic keyboard has.

There finally again. Also 16in is fine as the bezels have shrunk so the screen is probably bigger than a 17in. This is what professionals want. Hopefully it will have swappable memory, 2.5in drive, and a beefy GPU

It could happen depending on whether this is a redesign or just a larger version of the current design.  If it's a redesign, it's a chance for Apple to reevaluate everything, including the Touch Bar, keyboard switches, expansion...

 

As for the Magic Keyboard... I'm typing on one right now, and I think it's still using scissor switches, though they're definitely not wobbly.  It'd be amazing to have these keys on a MacBook Pro.

An addendum to what's mentioned in the post: there's also talk of AirPower and new AirPods (with a wireless charging case) arriving in the first half of the year.  More than a little overdue!

 

I'm also curious about the mainstream iPad going to a 10.2-inch display.  What else will it include, since that likely means a form factor change?  I wouldn't expect Face ID, since that's expensive, but it could be more than another modest spec bump.

Still not my thing, once you go 21:9 ultrawide you never go back.

31" is pretty big... and I doubt it will run on battery.

The big problem when the 5k iMac was made was that there weren't external bus structures that handled a 5k stream reasonably…they didn't even handle 4k well over a single cable at that point.  Thankfully, we've progressed a lot since then.  I don't know if 6k is in the current specs though, and honestly seems like a weird resolution, as I would expect the next jump from 4k (and 5k to add a touch of content creator room to 4k), to be 8k, which has industry support even if it isn't fully mature.

 

I expected a new display or display line from Apple, to go with the new modular and upgradable Mac Pro they've already promised pro users will be released this year.  My fear is that they include an external GPU in the display and make everything modular that way, rather than in a normal system that can be easily upgraded, but we shall see.  I expect we will learn at least a little more about the Mac Pro come WWDC this year.

That would be actually amazing. Same size with the screen size bumped up.

 

Still wouldn't buy though. Prices are ridiculous.
