In the markte for 1TB SSD and a 2+TB archive drive

MrSadman

Hey,

My current drive setup is old and full and making noises that drives are not suposed to make. Not to mention the machine could really use a perf boost from an SSD

So, looking at my storage needs I figured a 1TB SSD would be a good choice, This would be enough space for my aplications, resultfiles etc but would also have space to store raw video/pictures while I am working on them.

The standard choice would be an 860 EVo but if I wanted to save a couple of bucks would either the Crucial MX500 or WD Blue series be a viable option?

I don't really mind a small drop in speed and both drives seem to come with a 5 year warranty while costing about 25€ less. Any other drives to consider?

Then an archive drive to put stuff on, that I don't really use but don't want to just delete. So, can be a 5400RPM drive, the quieter, the better. Need 2TB or more. Would prefer a reputable brand with decent life time expectancy.

WD Green maybe? Haven't really kept up with the HDD market : P

Any tips are welcome

For Boot SSDs:

Team Group L5 Lite 3D, Adata SU800 (or the XPG models) are your "budget" options.

For higher end:

WD Blue (BLUE!) 3D

Crucial MX500

Samsung 860 Evo

The right Intel parts (which can be really hard to find for a reasonable price most of the time)

See here:

If you have a M.2 slot, going that way comes with a little more cost but there are good options.

On HDDs, WD or Seagate at the RPM count you want. Just depends on which brand you've had the best experience with.

The WD Blue and Samsung 860 EVO are both SATA SSDs and perform very similarly.

I have a 500GB 860 and a 1TB WD Blue, the Blue has higher writes; but they have near identical reads.

For the HDD, I'd get a Seagate Barracuda or a Toshiba X300. The X300 can be 7200rpm even at 4TB (still a quiet drive), and the Barracuda seems to only be 5400rpm past 2TB. WD Blue HDDs are also quite good.

@MrSadman

Crucial is a decent option, but there is a reason Samsung is a well known SSD manufacture. Samsung's endurance is top notch. Crucial good too, but not as. Same goes with their memory.

WD Blue is where i would point you for a HDD.
