Overclocking on non overclockable mobo?

i have i5 660 2 core cpu running at 3.33 ghz and my mobo dosent allow overclocking is there a way to make some sort of custom bios that allows overclocking?

LGA 1156 should be able to BCLK / FSB overclock the CPU even if the board doesnt support overclocking. You ,ight not go far, but a bit of OC should be possible.

 

Unless you're talking about prebuilts, of which you can try SetFSB.

well first off over clocking that extremely old chip wont get you anywhere and there isnt really a way to get around your motherboard

When i go to bios> CPU conguration there is no option for overclocking

new boards can still be crap, I shit on a lot of them on a weekly basis when people buy the cheapest B350/B450 boards and try overclock on them.

 

FSB overclock doesnt need unlocked CPU, That's how the famous Q6600 gets overclocked.

Is this one of those Chinese boards off of eBay/AliExpress. "Hunan" or "Scorpion" stuff? If so, two things likely apply:

1. There is no VRM cooling, and you shouldn't be overclocking in the first place.

2. There are no options for overclocking, even FSB overclocking, in BIOS.

 

The good news is that a Xeon X3470 is cheap, or you can get a true quad i5-750 for very little cash. The -660 is a gimped dual core.

the I5 680 was still ok last time i had my hands on one but that was in 2016 i think? either way the main cost with LGA1156 is boards, the chips are dirt cheap so getting a better one is really inexpensive but this board seems like its probably crap too

1150 and 1156 seem to have criminally overpriced boards. 1155 is still fairly easy to find at a reasonable price, although they're usually retired workstation boards. 775 should be hard to find given its age, but there were eight trillion or so produced, so I would imagine we've got potentially up to a decade more before the everyday G41 boards start to leave us.

OP If you can't adjust the base clock or the front side bus i would also advise giving up. 

 

There probably is a good reason the option to change them is missing. the last thing you want to do is pump too much power with too weak power delivery and fry everything on that board.

It's not new. It's an architecture from 2008 and even overclocking won't make it magically run new games well, especially since it's only a dual core i5.
