(UPDATED - Claim has been removed) The Linux Gamer's response video to LTT got claimed by Fullscreen

1 hour ago, Spotty said:

You seem to be misinformed. There's a HUGE difference between a copyright claim and a takedown notice resulting in a copyright strike.

Copyright claims, which is what has happened here to The Linux Gamer are often an automatic process where Content ID detects that a portion of your copyrighted content has appeared in another video on Youtube, and will issue a copyright claim on the video. The video remains public and viewable by the viewers, however any ad revenue generated by the video may be redirected to the original copyright holder. There's no punishment for the channel when a copyright claim is made against them, they will just lose the revenue for the video.

Copyright strikes or takedown notices, which is what The Verge did, are when they manually issue a legal notice that a video is infringing on their copyright and that they demand the video be removed from the platform. The channel will then receive a copyright strike against their channel which comes with punishments for the channel, such as losing their ability to live stream or perhaps no longer being 'recommended' or promoted in the search results or feed which can severely hurt the channels traffic and views. If they are issued with multiple copyright strikes, their channel can be removed completely.

(snip)

This is an excellent explanation of how these things work.

I'd like to add that as long as the creator who gets the automated claim disputes it in a timely manner, there is no lost revenue during the period while it was "claimed".

I've been down at IBM Think for the last couple of days and this thread is the first I'm hearing of this issue.. Aaaand it's already resolved.

So, as far as I can tell, everything is working as it should...ish

We have noticed a significant uptick in copyright claims in the last couple of weeks, though, with some of them being in really really old content which suggests youtube has made some kind of change to ContentID and we've been trying to figure out how to address it.

We are generally pretty supportive of the creation of derivative works by our community and we want to make sure that they aren't being algorithmically claimed, but this change has caused other issues for us too. I woke up the other morning to a handful of claims made against Tech Quickie by LTT... Can't have that.

I'm sure this will be resolved, but it's probably going to take some time for youtube to get their crap in order, as usual.

UPDATE: the claim has been removed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Linux Gamer did a response video to LTT a few months ago, and his video got copyright claimed by Fullscreen because he used parts of this video:

and here is the video that got claimed:

my opinion: i don't personally understand why Fullscreen did this, The Linux Gamer did a response video which IIRC is covered by fair use...

Probably Fullscreen going overzealous with the automated copyright claiming, as it usually is in these cases.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This was most likely done by content id which, afaik automatically does this. Doubt that it was done manually.

I'm probably drawing lines between stars here, but I'm kinda still holding onto a vague inkling about youtube's automated system? (maybe it's late on the video screening? maybe postactive checks?)

(Lyle's verge video was posted in the same month as the original video in the OP, but like I said I'm just guessing here)

@LinusTech @nicklmg any comment from LTT?
If it's not already in the process, I'm sure a manual review of the claim by either yourselves or Fullscreen should be in order.

Entirely possible. It was a Copyright claim, not a Copyright strike & Takedown notice (which has to be manual), so there's every possibility that it was an automatic process. Hopefully it can be manually reviewed.

Fullscreen must have been notified and could have removed it.

The Verge got screamed at on twitter pretty hard about that one... so i don't know if that is the same thing as this, like the same kind of claim i mean.

definitely not the same kind of claim to the end, but maybe the same discovery mechanism? o_o

like maybe some popup that says "our automated system has determined that this video from someone else matches one of your videos. what would you like to do?"

yes that's what i thought too. but if that is the case Fullscreen could have removed this one.

Anyone else hoping that once this is resolved that LTT does a collab video with The Linux Gamer? Maybe with his help you could address some of the concerns and criticisms he raised about LTTs video about Linux gaming.

i hope they do. that would be nice of them. he has been using Ubuntu for years so.. he knows enough about it to improve on the LTT video in question.

There's also been a lot of advancements in regards to things like Proton since the LTT video came out, and more and more games are being supported by Proton every day. So could be due for an update to Linux Gaming video.

give them a day or two? how long ago was the notification?

It should say that in the description, right? I found no info that says Fullscreen Media is claiming the video, they probably removed it after the dispute.

come to think of it I'm not sure if I've seen it appear for video-based claims. music claims would always have the claimant's details on the video itself o_o

he states in the video 'today', but if you look at the screen capture it says February 14'th on the clock on his computer, so there you go.

MCNs are cancer from days long past of youtube. I wouldn't be surprised if LTT is stuck in an MCN contract from earlier in their channel creation and can't get out. I'm sure it doesn't represent the Views or Opinions of LTT and Staff.

someone from the LMG staff would have to confirm the partnership with Fullscreen...

but if they are not partnered this is even more messed up...
