This is $800 CAD. That's about $600 USD. Going with the "Canadian pricing is a lot more expensive" pattern with everything here like milk, motherboards and more, that's regular pricing.

Canadian customs WILL find and WILL charge you excessively high duties. Plus, it's a hassle to order from the USA for Canadians as usually they'll refuse to ship up north.

You can get a different SSD and such in canada, still a ton less.

Xbox has been known to be gauging for their branded products, and this $800 price tag would still be excessive at $400. It's been shown that SATA SSDs work so this is awful overcharging.

Does Canadian pricing include sales tax?

A 2TB SSD is what, $400 CAD? Add in a CAD $20-$50 enclosure let's say CAD $450. Add in tax (idk what it is in Canada, but for arguments sake lets say 10% or $45) that brings it up to roughly CAD$500. Add in some cut for Microsoft and let's say CAD$600. So CAD$800 still seems excessive.

Though I guess storage options like this is just one of those 'up-sell' accessories companies like this charge with their products to make some hefty profit margins. I can't remember what it was or which company it was from, but the other day I saw a PC System Integrator with a system that had a 1TB HDD in it as default, but charged an additional $100 to replace the 1TB with a 2TB Seagate HDD.

it's not about just the exchange rate, distributors are mostly to blame here. When the CAD and USD were at par, stuff was still more expensive up here, EVEN when it was produced here in Canada.

I remember CBC News did report on it back then, and simple stuff like a box of Aspirin was more than double the price over here. If I remember correctly, one of the excuse a distributor gave was something along "Canadians are used to pay higher prices anyway" ... Even with the exchange rate today, you can easily find products in Canada that are double the price, if not more.

If you take the exchange rate into account, I can understand a 15-20% price increase, since we're a smaller market and often need separate packaging (the French language and all). But most of the time, it's a lot more than 15-20%.

I haven't done this in a while, but a few years ago I used to buy my stuff online in the US and have it shipped to a warehouse just beside the border. I would then go and pick it up the next weekend it arrived. Even with all the fees added up (the storage fees they're charging and the fuel), it was still much cheaper (like that time I bought some car parts for $40 USD shipping included ... over here it would've been over $150 CAD with shipping).

Do you think the LTT merch store can use that same warehouse for shipping merch items? :D

It would actually be the other way around. I know that some Canadian companies that are beside the US border will actually fill a delivery truck once or twice a week, cross I'm the US and ship from there because USPS is SOOOO much cheaper than any options we have here in Canada.

Sadly, that's one of the biggest downside of Canada, despite being right beside the US, everything is more expensive, even when it doesn't have to. :(

Hahaha. I love how everyone just took it for face value. Did you try clicking the two capacities?

500GB - $199

1TB - $399

Granted, still overpriced, but no where near as bad as the OP stated. It's also likely that they're basing it off what they had to pay, not what current market conditions are; one of the disadvantages to mass ordering before prices fell drastically on solid state storage.

Not really. IIRC there isn't even duty on a majority of PC components. If you get charged duty erroneously, you simply fill out a customs form and they'll cut you a check within a week. If you live near the border, you can easily pick parcels up at any number of parcel receiving companies, or have it received and shipped from a US based location for a small fee.

It's not just distributors though, people often forget economy of scale. In the US they're buying multitudes what Canadian companies are, thus their pricing is drastically lower. One should generally expect about a 30% increase; you have to factor in duty as well as the currency differential.

Yes, I went to the site and checked the prices of the other drives. When did I imply that I didn't know the pricing of the other drives?

$800 for a 2TB SSD is a ripoff. The other drives being more reasonable doesn't change that. (although $200 for 500GB is still too much https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/LRkj4D/western-digital-blue-500gb-25-solid-state-drive-wds500g2b0a)
