Mismatch drives in DIY NAS

intel core i3-7100

Asus B250F Gaming

16GB DDR4

LSI 9211-8i HBA card

Boot Drive Not decided yet

Data Drives:
Excel Stor 80GB
WD 160GB
Seagate 160GB
Hitachi 250GB
HGST 500GB
WD blue 500GB
WD Black 500GB
HGST 1TB
Seagate 2TB
HGST 6TB *2

 

I want a Windows Home Server 1 replacement for this random pile of drives with proper supports and updates.

Sure you wanna use a Core processor for NAS?

For me though,i would choose Xeon-E3 123v6 and C236i from asrock and 16G ECC memory

At this point I would honestly suggest just ditching the 80 GB drive, it's not worth the electricity it uses to run. Possibly even ditching the 160 GB drives. You can probably go with an OS designed for NAS use, such as FreeNAS, OpenMediaVault, or Unraid

I think unraid is much better

Core processors are just fine for a NAS, a Xeon and ECC memory are way overkill for home storage.

How about going with Ryzen or older AMD platforms which also supports ECC

No,for stability,i chose low power consumption xeon such 1231v6

Ryzen,uh,you can use it,but actually it not splendid than xeon,so you no need to care even older AMD platform,cause older Althon and Opteron

There is no reason to use a Xeon.

There is no magic pixie-dust inside Xeons, they're just CPUs. There is NO reason why one couldn't run any regular CPU 24/7/365 and plenty of people do that all the time, including me.

Indeed. Ryzens make for very good home-server CPUs, especially because they still let one use ECC, if one really insists. (Though, personally, I do not see the point in going for ECC at home, either.)

For a single socket system, a standard desktop cpu in the Core range has all the same features as the Xeons. 

You only need to look at Xeon's when you start going multi processor systems or high core count systems. 

 

Personally, i'd get 1 more HGST 6TB, make a 3 disk array with something expandable like UnRAID or Rockstor, maybe keep the 2TB as a backup for anything super important and then just sell all the rest of the drives. It would be far quieter, more reliable and use less power than having all the rest of those small drives.

I`d rather store something in my cloud drive...

Depends how fast you wanna go. If you have at least a 3 drive RAID5 in your server/NAS and an SSD in your PC you can double the performance of your NAS by going 10Gbit with lots of room to go even faster.

It depends on your requirements...for 99% of households or small businesses no. Most people only have a few users and most arent doing creative work with files that are 10's of Gigabytes in size. Majority of users are using smaller files, or they're streaming video which gigabit can easily handle. 

 

If you have a working condition like LTT or a large number of users then you'll need 10Gbit.
