Malware.PNG - Android 7-9 affected by malicious PNG files, allows code execution

rcmaehl

Source:
Android

Sophos

Summary:
Google has released February patches, including a patch that prevents malicious PNG files to run code on your device with some unrestricted privileges. Anyone not on the 2019-02-05 patch level under device info is affected until their manufacturer and carrier release this patch, which may never occur due to the fragmentation that is within the Android ecosystem.

Quotes/Excerpts:

Quote

A trio of bugs...could have opened up Android 7, 8 and 9 to remote attackers wielding booby-trapped image files. [These bugs] could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted PNG file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process. The bugs were inherited from an open-source image handling programming toolkit called Skia...managed by Google, and used...in many products, including Chrome, ChromeOS and Android. Feeding malformed PNG files into Skia...could cause it to access and use memory that it shouldn’t. If you can trick a program into consuming and trusting memory that it didn’t initialise itself, and you can find a way to manipulate the contents of that not-safe-to-use memory ahead of time. Typically, RCEs based on memory mismanagement involve persuading a program into downloading and using booby-trapped data – something that ought to be perfectly safe, if the error-checking in the program is correct – and then tricking the program into treating some of that data as code, executing it instead of merely processing it. Bugs that can be triggered by image files such as JPEGs and PNGs are particularly handy for attackers, because it’s not considered controversial for software such as your web browser to fetch and display images. But images aren’t supposed to contain executable code, and even if they do, it’s not supposed to cause problems, so browsers and image viewers that fetch picture files from remote web servers generally just process and display them without so much as a by-your-leave.  The good news is that the bugs were patched in Google’s February 2019 update. Of course, given the size and variability in the Android ecosystem, it’s anyone’s guess when, or even if, the relevant patches will filter down to your phone. The other good news is that... there’s no sign that they’ve been abused in the wild to mount attacks. If you’re an Android user on version 7 or later, make sure you’ve got your February 2019 updates. If you haven’t, ask your handset vendor or carrier when you can expect them to arrive.

My Thoughts:
Google, just, what the hell. The PNG file format was created in 1996. There's been 22 years of understanding on how to correctly parse these images and yet here we are, 22 years later, with images being used maliciously to run code on devices. My disappointment is immeasurable compared to something such as stagefright.

Editors Note: This is a 3-4 day old article, however it flew under my radar when it was initially announced. Regardless, I do feel compelled to post it due to the nature of the issue.

oh god, here comes the memes O_O

Is that meme your friend posted an actual joke or is it a maliciously crafted PNG file designed to steal all your photos? The world may never know. unless you open it in a hex editor or actually you know, inspect the file.

But I thought open source code was inherently more secure?  Oh, wait, it normally isn't any different than the closed kind.

(I'm being a bit scathing, but there is a cult of open source that incorrectly assumes people will be constantly examining code in a way they don't with closed-source content)

Oh boy, can't wait to see all the devices that will NEVER receive Pie, let alone anything newer. This is one of things why Android sucks. All of a sudden we now have millions of devices that will never get updated and secured.

Probably only saving aspect of it is that most components most susceptible to this exploit are still updatable as apps (browsers, WebView etc). For everything else it's just too many variables to make it useful.

What a pointless and idiotic comment. I thought trolling was against the rules on this forum.

1) Nobody says that open source software is impenetrable and has perfect security. What people are saying, and which is true, is that open source software is easier to examine and test by third parties which often results in issues being founds and fixed. That is unlike closed source software where companies are often not interested in fixing issues and would rather just let internally known security holes remain untouched in the hopes that nobody else finds them.

2) Closed source programs have had similar vulnerabilities in the past. Here is one in Windows from 2015 which worked in a very similar way.

3) People are correct when they say that people examine open source code in ways they don't with closed source code. That does not guarantee that every single potential exploit will be discovered though.

I'm not saying closed source is better -- I apologize if I came across that way.

I'm just annoyed by the "open source is always better" myth, and this is a particularly glaring example of that in action.  This bug has existed for years across multiple Google projects, and not one person noticed it until just recently.  Open source is only better if people are continuously poring over code to check for security flaws, and that's only sometimes the case -- and they might still not catch something any sooner than they would for a closed project.

Really, the most important thing is to have people scrutinizing your product, whether it's closed or open.

Open source is always better though, but you can't compare two different pieces of software and go "this is less secure because it is open source" or "this is less secure because it is closed source".

A program being open source is always better for the consumer and third party developers, than if the same piece of software was closed source.

Program A (closed source) might be better than program B (open source), but program A (as open source) would be the best out of all three.

Being open source makes it easier for others to find issues which leads to more issues being fixed (compared to if the same product was closed source). It also means development is done out in the open, ready to be scrutinized by the public in a very different way from closed source, where issues can be brushed aside and ignored in a much different way from with open source.

And you can't point to one or a handful of examples of security issues in an open source product and go "see? Open source isn't better!" because for all we know, the issue might have taken longer to be discovered if the source had been closed source. You also can't compare different software and judge them on the sole criteria that one is open and one is closed, and that's the only thing that matters.

Yes, the most important thing is to have people scrutinizing your products. Software being open source allows that to happen much easier and with less bias than closed source programs.

Oh boy, can't wait to see all the devices that will NEVER receive Pie, let alone anything newer. This is one of things why Android sucks. All of a sudden we now have millions of devices that will never get updated and secured.

Almost as if....that is the point.

What is the point? That Android has a monumentally retarded maintenance scheme and most devices are basically sold "as is" unless they are flagship model which might get you 3 years of updates if lucky?

7, 8 and 9 eh?  Good thing my phones are still on 2.3 and 4.4

? just kidding

The sad part is that it'll take a long time before most flagship devices will get updated.  Lower-end models may get no patches at all indeed.

Now's a good time to check if your Android device can run Lineage OS.

Any security agency would want as much vulnerable software as possible, who knows, these vulnerabilities might be made on purpose.

Great, it's a bad day to be using a custom ROM then, no updates on that.... Then again it wasn't getting any official updates before either.

Depends. LineageOS has super regular updates. My Mi5 had January security updates in January (though granted, it's nightly builds which I checked the changelog so I wasn't installing empty ones). Stock MIUI is still on October 2018 security update iirc. And now Xiaomi sacked updates for Mi5 altogether as it's "too old". One of reasons why iOS has a serious edge. When one device updates, all of them do. And support goes like 5 years back, 5 generations of devices. This really pissed me off with Android and their bullshit "we're so good we guarantee you 2 years of updates". Only 2 years software support on a flagship for +800€ is an insult. Especially since updates always arrive months late or never at all. Which is one of reasons why I started to be more forgiving for Apple's high prices. Software support costs money, but if I have to give 800€ to some crappy Android vendor I might just as well give 800€ to Apple and have a guaranteed software support for next 4-5 years. That ain't insignificant thing and for me software matters more than raw hardware specs.

I can confirm. My S5 is already on the February patch level thanks to LineageOS. Although it's age is starting to show, I'm glad I'm still able to use it instead of being stuck on Android 6.

LineageOS is only available as "unofficial" for Oreo and the official one is Nightly (alpha) Nougat based with plenty of bugs and battery drain issues.
It also doesn't have an FM Radio app (nor do third party ones works), which is a turn off for me. (On my specific device, dunno about others)

I really wish Google would make it easier for Security Updates to be installed on any firmware.

Google is attempting to with newer devices (launched with Oreo or newer) under project Treble, however it hasn't seemed to help manufacturer's at all.

Because it's not in their interest to stay on 1 device for 4 or 5 years, they need to sell more, more and MORE. It basically just makes it less effort to make those 2 or 3 updates they release and then they stop anyway. So, Treble isn't really helping much unless Google forces vendors to support things for longer or terminate their partnership. That's really the only way they'll do anything.

There's been 22 years of understanding on how to correctly parse these images and yet here we are, 22 years later, with images being used maliciously to run code on devices. My disappointment is immeasurable compared to something such as stagefright.

First of all, why is Android allowing PNG files to execute code at all?  I can't see many reasons... And if for some reason they are allowing the file type to execute code, why is not checking/scanning the contents of the executable code?

Feeding malformed PNG files into Skia...could cause it to access and use memory that it shouldn’tIf you can trick a program into consuming and trusting memory that it didn’t initialise itself, and you can find a way to manipulate the contents of that not-safe-to-use memory ahead of time.

Forgive my ignorance but isn't this similar to how Spectre and Meltdown bugs worked?

It allows a rogue process to read all memory, even when it is not authorized to do so.

Obviously it's not reading all memory, but the malcious PNG code is accessing parts of the system's memory that it shouldn't... I can see some similarities.

The PNG files themselves aren't executing the code, they're triggering bugs in the Skia image renderer that causes it to execute code that can be stored within the image.
