I know it isn't a K processor but it can be slightly boosted. How do I do this?

You cant. You can only let the turbo boost do its thing and thats it.

AFIK you could set the single core turbo boost clock to constant all core clock on z series motherboards, but it would be very pointless for you to go and get a z series mobo just for that.

 

As it stands, you have an non-overclockable cpu, with an non-overclockable motherboard, so a very bad combo for overclocking, so sorry, but nothing you can do.

 

Just enjoy your motherboard with the turboboost, it is still plenty fast.

you can't especially with an H310 motherboard, but with Z370/Z390 you can use MCE i think. (not 100% sure)

With a Z370 or Z390 motherboard I'm pretty sure you can take advantage of BLCK.

As i said, you have a H-series motherboard, so nothing you can do.

 

But i dont see why you would need more performance, the i5 8400 is plenty fast, especially for your gpu.

IIRC if you have a Z board you can use BCLK to get to 102.5.

 

This brings your turbo table to

 

4,000 MHz (1 core), x 102.5 = 4100
3,900 MHz (2 cores), x 102.5 = 3997.5
3,900 MHz (3 cores), x 102.5 = 3997.5
3,900 MHz (4 cores), x 102.5 = 3997.5
3,800 MHz (5 cores), x 102.5 = 3895
3,800 MHz (6 cores) x 102.5 = 3895

Since your CPU and motherboard are both non-overclockable, you don't have any option other than to let your CPU do its thing.

Your CPU can boost its frequency up to what's called a turbo clock. Since you've got an i5 8400, your turbo clock is quite a bit higher than your base clock (base clock is 2.8GHz, max turbo clock is 4GHz). 

IIRC your CPU will only run at that turbo frequency when under load, and even then it probably won't get up to 4GHz.

Usually it seems they will hang around their 6-core turbo boost, which is around 3.8ghz for the 8400 stock.

 

I know when I left my 8700k at stock, it would hang around 4300 all day and never touch the 4.7ghz single core boost as advertised.

There are other non-performance mods that you can certainly get some enjoyment out of.

 

Consider RGB components, fans, coolers, etc. open side panel cases.

 

They wont' give you FPS but they are observable differences and improve your quality of life (if you like that)

 

or go with upgraded input devices, monitors, etc.
