new build to replace main pc

emosun

I'd like to replace my main desktop machine as it's getting quite old. My initial goal was to only purchase a new board and cpu and reused my old ram, However , v3 xeons don't seem to support ddr3 which makes me SOL. So either I have to settle for v2 xeons or buy new ram. So I'm planning a parts list as if i'm going to be buying new ram , heres what i have thus far.

mobo https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X10DRH-CLN4.cfm

cpus https://ark.intel.com/products/81059/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2697-v3-35M-Cache-2-60-GHz-

Will be reusing drives , power supply , gpu , chassis , and drive controller.

Wondering what a good ram selection would be. I'd like it to be over 32gb. the ram isn't going to be overclocked and doesn't need to have rgb or heat spreaders on it (i would genuinely prefer it have neither). currently have 24gb and i tend to run out a lot in after effects

G.SKILL Aegis or Fortis will probably be the best option assuming you don't need ECC. It's not fast but it will do what it needs to do.

the board uses ecc registered. those appear to be unbuffered

In that case here's some Samsung ECC registered memory.

What are you planning to do with this computer? Why do you need expensive xeons?

i was also considering a "threadripper" style cpu however it appears to be slower than the dual xeon option.

perhaps theres a different board i'm missing that supports ddr3 and faster cpus?
