I've seen you do lots of videos with sound bars, gaming, but surround sound lacks a little attention I think.

So my question is: "Does surround soundbenefit your gaming experience?"

You can include comparisons of 2.0 vs 5.1 vs 7.1 vs "Virtual Surround" headphones

You could end with some consumer advice on which off-the-shelf surround set has the best bang for the buck.

Don't forget adding a comparison of sound cards when using analog outputs (I prefer Asus Essence STXII with original OPAMPs even though other OPAMPs are included)

Add some amazon links to surround sets, sound cards and headphones and you're golden.

--edit--

This might actually be a topic to big for a Quickie though.

And if you need me to comment on the actual drivers inside the speakers, crossover design and component choices you can ask me anytime.

From the techquickie suggestion thread.

You guys really made this video in 3 hours?

I'm sorta the virtual surround sound guy in the audio forums here. I'm so glad you guys decided to cover this. I wholeheartedly agree with the conclusion that you don't need gaming headphones per se, you can just add headphone surround sound processing to whatever headphones you want to use.

One mystery is why the aiming accuracy is worse than the pointing accuracy for some people. You're theoretically giving people more sensory information, so people should be doing better. I think the reason has to do with mouse sensitivity - the people who weren't gamers were making incorrect assumptions with how much they were turning, and thus were basing their answers on misleading movement information.

strange, I'm kinda curious on how poorly the 7.1 headset "reproduces directionality" now o_o even Creativelabs mentioned never doing multidriver headphones because "that's not how things work"

I don't know what you're talking about. It's clearly the sound of an f1 car going around Monza

Correct me if I am wrong, but does Linus just recommend getting some good quality headphones, disregarding if they are surround sound or stereo headphones, and buying dolby atmos or any other surround sound software?

And if that's the case is windows sonic a decent enough software?

Yep, an ear cup isn't a room, a cup over your ear produces the "ocean" as we all know from childhood.

Yeah, in PUBG sound is superior than without preset. I have ATH-M40x with AE-5

You missed testing Windows' built in spatial sound option surprisingly. It would have been a nice comparison to have.

I would personally have recommended trying HeSuVi also.... https://sourceforge.net/projects/hesuvi/ It may not be perfect, but it's free and very customizable. It may be worth trying out before spending money on other solutions.
