Reddit receiving massive investment from Chinese social media giant Tencent

Recommended Posts

I hate reddit, but wow I love that after the announcement users started to spam content about Tienanmen square

you are confusing freedom of speech and the 1st amendment. There is nothing government specific to free speech.

God knows what they'll take from Reddit? Personal data? Freedom of speech? We might need a new place for discussing ideas and posting memes...

That’s not how investments work...but it is still suspicious as to why a Chinese company would invest in Reddit...

Uhm for people who don't know let me just lay these two -

Tencent...

Telemetry(???)

Now connect them together!

Tencent did invest some significant amount in Epic Games... so connect that too.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Have you considered 4chan?It's not blocked in China and has fresher memes that reddit copies from.

Reddit:  The sweaty ass-crack of the Internet.  They can't claim the title "asshole of the Internet" because 4chan still exists.

They technically can't, as Reddit isn't government-owned or sanctioned, and freedom of speech does not apply there(much like here, for example). You basically have to follow the various rules and you won't be removed from communities or have your content removed from the site.

Freedom of speech isn't just a law, it's a principle and a core tenet of western culture. Even if they are legally allowed to censor /regulate discourse of their platform, it doesn't make it right.

I'm guessing Tencent is expecting Reddit to eventually make a IPO on the stock market. Could be very lucrative for them in the future. Otherwise I don't really see why else they put that much of an investment in.

personal data? it's not like governments and companies aren't selling it already... data is sold to the one who offers more money

what freedom of speech? I got banned for saying "libtard" lol and there are countless users who also got banned for saying stuff like that

as long as there are moderators and a centralized server, freedom of speech doesn't exists, this applies to any site

you can't discuss anything on reddit, it's not a place where you can truly express yourself specially in politics

Don't get me wrong, you could do this when the site was just launched but not since 2010 where the whole site took a turn to the dark side.

The term you are thinking of is Freedom of Expression. Free Speech is the legal term used by the US and any other country with free expression laws on the books. Freedom of Expression is the term coined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
