Looking for a good laptop

6 minutes ago, GeneXiS_X said:

Some extra features like RGB, Killer wifi etc which isn't that significant. I would go for GP73 personally since build quality, cooling, display quality and input devices are pretty much the same

Thanks. GP73 is 1200GBP but only has 128GB SSD, so it is an extra 100GB for a 250GB one. 1300GBP total.

GE73 is 1400GBP with a 256GB SSD.

Is 100GBP worth the upgrade? Or should I wait for prices to drop?

Not worth it, upgrade by your own if you think that it's not enough

Heard arguments that aluminium keyboard is more durable, as in it will last longer. However, at the price of GE73 it is also possible to get an Omen, which seems superior.

I have read people saying that GP73 has a cheaper plastic one and GE73 has a more durable one.

In regards to the Omen, I understand that it is not the best, however I also believe that the cooling is weaker, even if the laptop is not necessarily worse - rather people were saying that the build and keyboard is better on Omen.

However, as I understand, cooling is the priority, and even if we compare GP/GE73 with Omen and GL703, the cooling is better at Msi, making it seemingly a better choice? My budget is limited and I would not spend more than 2000 GBP but I see that below that it is still possible to get a decent one? As all I keep seeing is either to get a desktop or go with a more expensive laptop, both which I can't do.

Thanks.

After owning a ge63 I would never touch one again unless it was free.

The omen may not be great, but after using it for a while the 2018 omen line up is worlds better than the 2018 ge63 and that's just based off of build quality.

Does Omen have any 17.3 ones from 2018? Thank you.

I know they have a 17 inch model. I have never touched it. I just never saw a use for a 17" laptop.

If it was between 1060 and 1070, and between Omen 17, GP73, GE73 and GL703 - which one would you go for? Omen seems to have a little worse off cooling but much better build quality, but it is out of stock mostly and also more expensive.

Also given GTX 1660, is it worth a wait. I started to think about a laptop since last October

Hmm interesting...I'll try to find more info on that

the cooling is adequate (for maxed up specs), but not great

If you have the budget, RTX laptops might be a good choice

Something like this:

Unfortunately, RTX is out of my budget.

Currently, I am contemplating GP73.

How much time do you reckon before the price drops by 50-100GBP? Given also the introduction of GTX 1660 in the near future.

It's 1200 Pounds. GP73 is 1200, plus 100 for an SSD, a total of 1300. GP73 with a 1070 is 1400.

My concern is that 1060 will prove weak faster. Do you reckon it's worth it to wait a little bit for GP73 1070 to drop in price? MSI has a better cooling but a worse build, plus QC issues, however it has 1070.

I would just get the TongFang GK7CP0S. 2060N=1070N

RAM and storage upgrades aren't that expensive anyway

Fair enough. While the RAM might push through, storage would be needed immediately and it's about 100 Pounds for a decent one.

Sure thing! First, I came upon Samsung EVO 970 NVMe 500GB, as it seems the best deal. However, after I came upon EVO Plus.

Do you really need high performance SSD? Most users will be fine with a good SATA drive. Runs cooler too

You mean an HDD? I will be playing World of Warcraft and have heard that SDD helps tremendously in the loading speeds.

Thank you, I will look into it.

Coming back to the question of 1060 vs 1070/2060, do you reckon that the latter will be much more viable long-term? Obviously, it will, but I am trying to justify the price increase. Overall performance increase seems about 25%, similar to the price.

I am not sure how long the laptop will live but I am guessing 3-5 years, hopefully with a decent scrap value.

There's a reason that I'm not getting a 2080, as I am looking for that sweet spot of value/balance
