Ads in the future

So I just had the random « shower thought » after playing Jetpack Joyride on my iPhone. This mobile game is annoying to play as it is full of ads, these ads are required to unlock free prizes and coins. 

 

So what if the game developers somewhat used the Face ID feature of the iPhone to ensure that the user is actually watching the ad, instead of flipping down the phone and doing something else until the ad finishes?

 

Wouldn’t that be gruelling?

i recently opened angry birds on my phone that i had installed back in 2014, jesus fuck has the game turned into micro transaction ads fuck fest.

That would be more of a Google ad platform thing. App developers aren't ad-agencies and they don't get additional income by implementing things like that, unless a partnership occurs between them and an ad-agency, but that would shoot themselves on the foot, as if data shows that few people actually watch ads, then it may reduce the potential ad revenue they would otherwise do... and they would need to spend the millions in implementing that.

 

Google and Apple on the other hand are ad-agencies. A simple API code is typed in by the developers and voila!, Ads in their app. The devs get money automatically via their Google/Apple dev account.

 

The, maybe, better news, is that Microsoft has the patent for this:

I can be bothered to use free apps. Even those are plauged with ads. So annoying.  The pop up ads are the worse ones. I despise them

I agree. I have no problem buying apps. Just have a trial version to check compatibility and see if it allows to meet my needs. And that is it.

Would rather have these than astroturf. Reddit is particularly marred by this.

Airplane mode = No ads. 

 

I've also found that enabling "parental restrictions" where I disable the app store will also disable lots of ads in games. (Because most ads will link you to the app store, and since it's disabled.... no ad.)

Or simply use a pihole and you can be online and see zero ads on all mobile games. Also stops all the trackers in them

I remember jetpack joyride when it first came out, such a good game.

Now, as any other old phone game, they have just killed it with adds.

The game is still very fun! Even more so since they added new power ups and upgrades. Just play it in Airplane mode. You'll dodge the ads that way at the expense of losing out on some very minor rewards. Evidently, this game is a massive grind or money sink if you want to unlock the best features (power ups & upgrades...). But if you don't unlock these super features then the game is very similar to what it was 4 years ago and that's good.
