VGA bios/shunt mod for gtx 1080

Gthu11.7

I want to squeeze as much performance I can out of my 1080. at full voltage and power/temp limit,183 on the core and 100 on the memory it starts to artifact at around 2050-2100 with red sparkles everywhere. I have a accelero coming soon and was wondering if flashing a bios from a another gigabyte 1080 or doing a shunt mod would help with the power limits to help stability. I dont really care about the degradation of the GPU and just want to know what is the better option. thanks

Dont ever do this. Its not worth it, its not wise to shunt mod or do flashes for power performance. If you brick your card its pretty much a straight no for RMA.

I have so much thermal headroom though :( any other ideas on how to raise tpd and voltage?

Most of pascal was Fine with thermals, You are pretty much maxed out. Power mods and such cause instability, especially in games. Theres no pure gain in doing this as you arent being paid for overclocking and such.

Dam, fair enough man.

Which GTX1080 is this, VBIOS ver? What are the actual clocks? Memory +100 doesn't sound much but don't know how much you have to start with.

Are you sure you have thermal head room?

all 5 of my 1080’s have been over 2100, highest being 2175. All reference boards aside from the strix. Which got returned.

How excacty do you plan on flashing it?

Ive flashed every card I’ve owned prior to pascal. Never had an issue though.

Main RIg Corsair Air 540, I7 9900k, ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 32GB, 3090FE, EVGA 1000G5, Acer Nitro XZ3 2560 x 1440@240hz

Spare RIg Lian Li O11 AIR MINI, I7 4790K, Asus Maximus VI Extreme, G.Skill Ares 2400 32Gb, EVGA 1080ti, 1080sc 1070sc & 1060 SSC, EVGA 850GA, Acer KG251Q 1920x1080@240hz

This is my card https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/189296/gigabyte-gtx1080-8192-161006 and this is the other card that i would like the bios from to flash with my own. https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/189642/gigabyte-gtx1080-8192-170109 right now, im hitting 70c ish with 100% fan speed but cant raise core clock due to power limits, hence the artifacting. I am yet to receive my artic accelero iv cooler so thermals should not be of worry.

Thermals will always be a concern. Given how the steps work. Doubt that air cooler will get you much lower. Enough to lose over 50hz. If you aren’t running at 39-41c you are losing steps.

Gains are probably not going to be huge. I cross flashed my Galax 1080 with the Asus T4 VBIOS which allows up to 1.2V and has no power limit.

Here's an old Time Spy run at ~2250MHz. Temperature was also at 70C but Pascal prefers the cold. Ended up going back to standard Galax VBIOS as the gains didn't seem that worthwhile for the extra stress on the card.

Ok will see how the temps fair once I get my cooler then we can go from there :)

Highest score I could get without artifacting was 4279. is that alright? I saw that some other 1080 got over 5k score

Seems very low, my own were

Score 8953

GPU Score 8804

CPU Score 9907

What CPU are you using? If you go into the advanced search with your CPU and GPU using one card you can hopefully get an idea of what is expected.

My bad forgot to mention that I used Unigine super position benchmark at 1080p extreme preset

Could always add some. Should have seen that coming though.
