Spotify banning ad blockers

For many that wont matter, the damage is already done and no amount of blocking/banning going to do any good.....

Not gonna lie, I don't think that's a problem. I doubt Spotify will even notice the drop in any significant manner. And since the Artists/studios will still get the same amount of money? Yeah - this is still a good plan for Spotify.

The problem isnt that websites have ads, but the fact that they have a ton of them and usually in very irritating places. Not to mention full overlays/popups....

None of these things are on Spotify - the site in question.

Besides, after you've Whitelisted Spotify, you can adblock sketchy sites to you hearts content.

Then whitelist Spotify?

And keep everything else blocked. They are not saying you have to nuke adblock from all your devices in order to access their library, just that if you are not willing to see ads and have no planning on becoming a premium user then they have no reason to do business with you.

And as mentioned before: Spotify ads are benign, as harmless as the ones in duckduckgo or here in LTT, they are not the annoying porn mmo popups, they are not the obvious malware "fuckbook meet single woman near you in <IP location here>", they are not clickbaits "see how this man made xxxxx amount of money and why banks hate him", they are just audio queues majority of which are Spotify own ad for premium and in really rare occasions a video ads that lasts half of the audio one and gets loaded in 360p, and they are not even user specific targeted ads.

There many reasons to hate internet ads in general, and many reasons to criticize Spotify (the discover weekly playlist could be better, the mix playlist could actually try to add new tracks once in a while at the the top of the playlist and when you know I already have saved an album in my library, have listened to it both locally and streamed hundreds of time, why the f are you making a mix playlist with all the tracks of that album?!), but the ads they serve aren't one of those.

When my boss turns it on in the office in the morning for the first 4 hours of day, all we get are the ads for premium that give you the 30 mins no ads afterwards. In rare occasions ads for a new album release.

If I have to compare I've heard more, longer ads in Pandora, Deezer and Beats Radio (Apple Music) than I ever did on Spotify before buying into premium.

The only one that served less ads, basically none, compared to Spotify was SoundCloud, but the tracks are mostly indie thrash imo so I hardly ever use it

Yeah, but I only get pubg ads cause I’m on ps4 (and since it’s new-ish, they still have ads) but I’m getting less and less of those.

and I get the “thank you for listening to Spotify, no really, you could have been listening to the radio” quite often

but most of my ads are like, 30 seconds long

if pihole you can, same if pfsense, you either just don't want to and you're barking at the wrong tree for wrong reasons or too lazy to open a tab to access you're router and add an address to the whitelist section

(...) an incident involving Spotify showed that applications can be used as a similar attack vector. Patrik Runald at Websense described how Spotify, a music streaming service, was displaying a malicious ad to the users of its media-playing application. The app rendered the ad and its malicious code as if it were a browser without requiring user interaction. “If you had Spotify open but running in the background, listening to your favorite tunes, you could still get infected.”

source: https://zeltser.com/malvertising-malicious-ad-campaigns/

I am quite certain than all of the big ad providers have been subject to malwertising at some point. The Internet is not a safe place and ad blockers make it that tiny bit better. Mostly the blocks are working on a whitelist basis because plenty of sites welcome you with huge amount of the worst kind of ads, that's why even though on this site ads are totally fine, many users will block them without any consideration.

I am actually curious what will be the effect of this change, probably it will be within error, but I hope for slightly worse outcome for them, just because I don't approve of bans like that. They could troll blocking users playing only Despacito on their devices(until they unlock the ads), but perhaps that would be too cruel.

i wish artist would just make it easy to buy their music so i could stop using spotify, its almost imposible to find some of the artists i listen to outside of spotify and even harder to buy their music and equally hard to pirate it. i wouldnt mind just buying the music to avoid Spotify. wonder if Spotify would detect Pihole tho ?

Cant seem to find any digital copies of Coheed and Cambrias previous albums and limited amounts from Avatar, nothing from Soilwork, i can find a single album from Seether. This is looking at mainly their own official merch stores and exluding Merchbar as thats also Spotify and im unsure as to how much of that will go to the artist. I dont get how its so hard to put up the music for digital download purchase for a fair price, i love me some vinyl but thats not convenient untill you rip it and its also pretty expensive. CDs are unavaiable for most of the albums too. Itunes i havent looked at, not sure how well that works outside of Apple stuff either. remember it being a bit of a pain tbh.

There's a bit on bandcamp for those bands but not much. In this day and age if a band doesn't put their music on distrokid or something similar (which gets it out to itunes, bandcamp, and most of the major online shops) then they just don't want to sell stuff.

If these guys have albums out through normal distribution channels then you should be able to order them at most music shops (they never stock a large range anymore because physical media just doesn't sell anymore).

Sorry. I have to note, if an advert is not making you wish you could gouge your eyes/ears out, then it's not hitting the marketing goals/budget/return. Same with loot boxes/casinos/drug dealing. It's a self destroying hamster wheel of pain. Yes, you can have nice adverts (just like you can have nice microtransactions in a game), but investment/economic/competitive pressure is a race to the bottom, always.

I'll not list the adds on Spotify that match this, but I certainly noted a trend of adult diaper/incontinence/diseases you cannot mention type adds that were in the tone of "we are holding your sanity/respect at ransom and will play these until you give us your $10!!!". ;)

Have you tried Google Music? I did a quick search and found like 15 albums from Coheed and Cambrias:

https://play.google.com/store/music/artist/Coheed_And_Cambria?id=Aeah2gbibeju4rflbrlu4ig6fki&hl=en

Granted, I have no idea how many albums they have (never heard of them), so maybe a bunch are still missing?

Either way, as @mr moose said, if they're not on the major platforms, they must not want to sell their music (or they're one of those annoying artists who "don't want to go mainstream" or some bullshit).

I'd suggest you reach out to the band on whatever social media they use, and ask them to put their missing albums on iTunes/Google Play, etc.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree extremely on this.

You're wrong - if an ad makes me want to kill myself, it's not really making me want to buy that product - often it's just pissing me off.

There are plenty of advertisers that know how to make good Ads. Coca-Cola is a good example. Usually their ads are fun, entertaining, and not shoving shit down your throat with overwhelming sounds and colours. Some (but not all) auto manufacturers, same thing.

A good ad is one that I (at least) mildly enjoyed watching (it was funny or entertaining or just nicely informational about the product), and one that puts the product/brand into my mind in a way that I'll remember them but with positive memories.

If I walk down the aisle at the grocery store and see a bottle of Coke, I'll have fond memories of their ads. If I walk down and see some product with a SUPER ANNOYING ad, it'll piss me off, and even if I needed that type of product, I'd buy their competitor out of spite.

this is mostly just a direct ban on cracked spotify apps like what i used to use, that give you access to premium features like ad removal without having to pay for it.

its not the end of the world, and not intended to ban you for running ublock

I gave up on Spotify. I am a student and I have a verified student credential that major banks use to loan students thousands of dollars, but for some reason that wasn't good enough for Spotify to renew my student subscription, so I cancelled it.

iTunes outside of the Apple ecosystem is a mixed bag - it depends on how you consume your music.

If you listen to music 99% on a computer with iTunes installed? It's perfectly fine - pretty good even (granted, you have to life with iTunes - some people hate it, others love it). If you listen to music on an iPhone as well? It's totally seamless. Even if your computer is a Windows Computer (Note: I have an iPhone 6s + a Windows 10 PC, and this is how I consume music).

If you also listen to music on an Android phone? It's not much different from manually ripping CD's and loading them onto an Android phone - most Android phones make you manually load the music anyway (no sync tool for the PC, that I'm aware of), so there's really not much difference there.

The main difference is simply that you have to use iTunes to buy/download the music - once you download it? It's DRM free, so do whatever you want. Move it over to Foobar2000. Use WinAmp. Use whatever. You don't even have to listen to the music in iTunes.

Google Music, I personally haven't used, but it's the "de facto" music buying platform on Android - many people love it. It has a similar selection to iTunes.

I couldn't answer that question. What annoys you about the ads? Is it annoying because it's taking up your time? (Eg: you're annoyed simply because you have to watch an Ad to begin with?) Or does a specific ad just annoy you because of it's content?

Some ads are totally annoying. I find a lot of TV ads to be annoying - especially since they tend to be a little longer. The sweet spot is 15 seconds for me. A 15 second ad I will generally let run start to finish, unless it's a product I have zero interest in or is irrelevant (Eg: menstrual supplies). 30 second ads are fine as long as it's not all the time.

Did you contact Spotify Support and try to sort it out? They don't want bank credentials. I'd highly doubt that bank credentials would be enough for them to tell if you're a student or not (since banks cater to both students and non-students - and Spotify legally can't access your bank records, so they can't check to see if you have a "student" account or not).

Instead, a picture of your student card would likely get your subscription renewed instantly.

well the student credential had everything they asked for. It had my school name, dates, my name, when I enrolled when my graduate date is. They still turned it down saying that it didn't have the required information, because they wanted my school schedule and I sent them a email and said that I went through their check list and the forum has everything they ask for a more.

I'm confused, can you clarify what this "student credential" is?

Because you said it was for a bank for student loans.

Is this your Student Loan account? Is it your login username? What exactly did you send them?

Don't you have a student card? Have you asked them what else they would accept?

sorry about that, the student credential at my university is a certificate that you can print out that gives banks everything they need to give you a student loan, or loan in general. It is used for verification purposes that the person who holds it is actually a student. Sorry for the confusion. I have a student card, but it the email they specifically asked for a schedule. I am taking 1 semester off for work, but I still am an "active student".
