Spotify banning ad blockers

Spotify is still a lot better than how it was before Spotify :) Also I do not think it is that expensive either considering what you get. I subscribe to Netflix much because it is the closest thing to Spotify when it comes to movies. I do not watch Netflix but I support it :)

Im rocking spotify, netflix and Amazon Prime. Spoilt for choice lol

More than 2 decades ago for me. I have way better picture and sound than the theater have anyway. I pay for Netflix though because I like the idea. Seen all the movies long before they reach Netflix so it is only to support the idea I am paying for it.

It just sucks that Europe gets so little content compared to USA on Netflix (of course they don't tell that openly anywhere, you have to find out yourself). Not to mention their notification for new movies is absolute garbage and I don't get it why is it so hard to have ENGLISH and ENGLISH (CC) subtitles. Instead, only CC is available so you also have to read [door slams] or [birds chirping] nonsense like they are incapable of filtering out squared brackets and make regular English out of existing subtitles. Not even asking for subs in Slovenian language... So bizarre really. I generally don't need subtitles because I understand English fine, but some movies have really quiet speech or really weird terminology where I prefer to turn subs on.

Spotify is going to start banning ad blockers on march 1st in their new terms of service.

I think that is a big deal because there are 170 million spotify users.

In March of 2018 2 million spotify users use ad blockers that's 2% of their users. Spotify started disabling those accounts.

I also use Spotify and an ad blocker on my PC. I don't agree with the new terms of service for that reason.

Also how many people think this is fair.

I can still put my fingers in my ears and go "lalalalalalla" when the adverts come on.

I haven't got a problem with music streamers like Spotify putting ads on, but I do have a problem when they're suddenly are starting to ban those who use adblockers since ads tend to be too intrusive as well as malicious. But, I will say this for Spotify: their ads as far as I am aware of are okay and not of the malicious kind. If only they would start fixing their mobile app by allowing the same free stuff (like able to play songs that we choose instead of using playlists) we can do on our PC counterpart instead of prioritizing on this. But hey, we're talking about a business so, money first as usual.

They already have a fix for that. Give them money.

Yeah, no thanks. That ain't the solution. If corporate was nicer and more fair, they would get rid of the mobile limitations and have Spotify Mobile just act like the PC version. We still get ads and don't have the ability to play offline music, so win win.

Oh and BTW those ads are everywhere what are we meant to do not use the internet

This is a non-issue.

I'm pro ad block 100% but unless you purchase the physical media or even the inferior digital files you do not own the product and therefore are in no position to complain over what spotify decides to do.

This generation of streaming and cloud service is nonsense. Designed specially with the corporation as the benefactor so that they have exclusive control over the product and the user never owns anything. You are only hurting yourself in support of this service model.

Being paid something is better than being paid nothing, which is seemingly what you want for them.  And I'd note that a paid subscription to Spotify delivers considerably more to artists than a free membership.

You're not entitled to listen for free without ads, just as you aren't entitled to steal a snack when you don't have pocket change.  At a certain point you have to accept that the money to create this music has to come from somewhere, and that you can't expect everyone else to pay for you.

I like how artists expect the same incomes than when there were only a relative few popular big bands. Today you have a few big even for extremely esoteric genres.

as for "learning about the industry" Spotify pays, on average, $0.00437 per stream, apple music pays $0.00735 and amazon pays roughly the same. From source to source these numbers fluctuate a bit but every time apple and amazon pay a lot more, even when you look Spotify’s premium tier, they still pay less than apple and amazon. This is from a company with twice the subs of any rival and larger market share than both apple and amazon, and yet artists still get paid pennies, even less after everyone has taken there cut. This is an industry that is amoral and corrupt, fleecing everyone it can so top execs keep their cash and yet you defend them. Spotify pays the least, like for like, to artists and yet you defend them tooth and nail. It’s hilarious. You all want to “support the artist” yet how many of you brought an album in the last year? Specifically, how many of you brought an album you could stream? Yeah id be shocked if the total number of streamable albums purchased with in the last year by all members who commented I this thread broke triple digits.

The industry has pumped out so much garbage for the last 20-30 years it has devalued itself. It saturated the market with pop crap for decades and now music is so ubiquitous people don’t want to pay for music. You see that’s the point an object is only worth, what people are prepared to pay for it and people just don’t want to spend money on music anymore.

Spotify are morons. If I had a free Spotify account (and I do ad block like a bitch) the very act of stopping from using it would be enough for me to go elsewhere, but I’m a c**t. most people may upgrade to a premium if they were stopped from streaming but if you ban them…..how many do you think will jump ship to amazon or apple?

so again tell me how i dont understand the industry?

Oh, and just an FYI apple music family plan since they launched it

I'll agree with the fact that the industry (at least major corporates) tend to be corrupt these days since they heavily influence the market, but that ain't new news. However, even if Spotify pays less then their competitors, the artists are still being paid in large sums due to the fact of the larger subscribers + free listeners that Spotify has gathered over the years.

I have a love-and-hate relationship with Spotify, because I like their service but I also hate how they handle their mobile app counterpart since they just keep it limited unlike their PC version part. This is something I've mentioned already before, but it is quite important factor. Regarding their banning of users that use ad-blocking, I don't really agree with that considering that some ads can be malicious. Good thing Spotify (at least for me) rarely or doesn't have any sort of odd looking ads.

And good thing I listen to soundtracks and older music since majority of pop-music these days tend to be... 'terrible'.

And Spotify is the only one with a good free model compared to Apple's you can listen to Beats Radiom and Amazon's cut down version of music unlimited if you are a Prime member or nothing if you are not.

On-topic: Even as a premium subscriber, i found this to be a dick move, but on the other hand Spotify ads aren't banner, aren't popups and aren't flashing windows, they're just sound bites and in rare occasion video ads shorter than what you get on a youtube video. Spotify's ads are pretty benign. Also keep in mind that Spotify is operating at loss with current rates

Quote

Previously ranked as the service with one of the worst payouts, Spotify has steadily increased its per-stream rate.

Last year, the service paid out $0.0038 per play.  Earlier this year, Spotify increased its per-stream payouts to $0.00397.  The streaming music giant now reportedly pays $0.00437 per play.  According to award-winning cellist and composer Zoe Keating, she received $0.00543 per play on average this year.  At $0.00473 per play, artists will need around 336,842 total plays to earn $1,472.

With over 191 million monthly active users, and 87 million subscribers, the service has lost over $584 million so far this year.  Per user, the service loses $2.68.

I believe Spotify has just started earning money, for example:

https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/06/spotify-gimlet-anchor-podcast-profitable/
I hope it ends bad for them, there is no way to reliably tell who is blocking ads, so I expect there will be plenty of missed bans, and a proper method around them will most likely surface in a week or so, what's more, the % of users blocking ads may increase if the news is popular enough to introduce more users to ad blocking magic.

buuut it's just me being bitter about not having a copy of the music, there are ways to get a free Spotify premium and yet I don't even have an account there, I wish sites like Bandcamp were much more popular, without DRM, where artists get good amount of money.

Now if whitelisting would work I would not mind but the sites I have seen implementing this demand you to uninstall adblocker to be able to browse the site. Personally I find it way to much work to uninstall it and reinstall all the time so I just do not go to these sites.

no. Just saying that even as a premium users i find banning people for using adblock is a dick move even if the types of ads spotify serve are the kind that will bring you malware, clickbaits and whatnot, they're not even user specific targeted ads. If anything they should just give the your using adblock banner thing and let you access once you have whitelisted them
