Pi hole on Arduino?

Can an arduino or similar micro controller run Pi Hole? I'm just trying to get house wide ad blocking as cheap as possible.

not to my knowledge.  you can however run it on basically any linux distro.

it can also be run on the $10 raspberry pi zero W  (although not recommended)

 

its doesnt take much to run, you may as well just get the rpi3, which is only $35

Raspberry Pi is the cheapest way.  Actually the cheapest way is to run a VM with pi hole and then incur no hardware cost but you have to leave that VM running 24x7.

Why is it that it isn't recommended to run it on a raspberry pi zero w?

its recommended to run it other ethernet, which the rpi0w does not have.

it doesnt take a lot to run it, and doesnt even use much network resources, but its just easier to have your dns server connected directly.

but for the combined costs you're getting closer to the cost of a full sized RPi...

An Arduino with an ethernet shield could probably do that job, but you would end up programming it from scratch.  The Pi-Hole software most likely won't fit on, much less run on, an AVR.

It would probably be easier to do on something like a Yun, which has a microprocessor running a Linux stack on board, but it's considerably more expensive than a Pi, and again you'll probably have to do a considerable amount of programming yourself.

 

I would just get a Raspberry Pi, I keep a few spun up and doing various tasks around the house, so once certain planned changes to my LAN are complete, I might just do something like that.
