Gaming on Apple Products?!?!?!?

According to Apple Insider, Apple will is rumored to be releasing a subscription service for gaming. Now, there is not a lot known about the service currently, but it will likely be for paid games that are already on the App Store.

 

Personally, I think this is actually a good idea. We might see developers make some decent mobile games because they won’t have to integrate ads or disadvantage people who don’t buy certain packs or loot boxes. What do you guys think?

i don't personally care because i don't play mobile games but it would be good to have less cancerous mobile games... 

 

you know, the one's that exploit some people who cannot deal well with the addictive nature of some mobile games and spend way too much money on them... if those go away because of this then good.

I mean, Game pass on Xbox worked out well. Why not copy the formula to something that isn't really used for games

I personally don't have Game Pass cause I only recently got an Xbox One and don't have time to be constantly playing games to justify the monthly $$. But I've heard that quoted argument so many times I wonder why it hasn't crushed sub services like that?

Considering the field of mobile gaming, that can either be good or not really that significant subscribtion. Most of the mobile games costs less than 10$ and if they have ads or in-app purchases the price is even lower. Those games that cost something and which are monetized to be single purchases are quite the minority because in mobile markets you cannot really get that high profits without harder monetization and that's where the big bucks are.

 

The article is pointing that the iPhone and iPad Pro have a lot of performance and could run "console grade" games. Can't argue with that, but the harsh truth is in mobile markets game that would cost 60$ wouldn't survive even with subscribtion based service. Huge single payment games have been tried in mobile platforms and they just don't attrach enough interest and sales to make them profitable, subscribtion isn't going to change that if Apple isn't going to start paying the developers full prices for every install, which would be extremely stupid from Apple. Why they work on consoles and PC is that the monetization on the platforms is completely different and even the target audiences are different (mobile games target casual gamers mostly because they are the majority, ever heard from hardcore mobile gamer?), they also build on the massive library of games offering games that have already way past the sales peak in subscribtions because developers/publishers can easily give them X thousands of copies for way smaller prices than those copies would otherwise cost (Humble is different with it's charity aims and that makes things a bit different because there's also good PR available).

 

It is somehow interesting to see what it will become, but my prediction is that even it becomes quite a money hole for Apple and expensive marketing for the performance of their new devices, it doesn't pull that much interest in the end because what it can offer isn't that appealing or with slight chance it does what it promises.

if it's forced i dont see it going over well. if it's like youtube red where you CAN pay and you wont see adds, or get access to exclusive games, then sure, go for it

More like apple fanboys are more likely to buy mountains of in game items on mobile games. You'd probably make more if you made a game and had it only release on IOS instead of just Android

false, Apple does have a better mobile gaming experience. Less low effort apps due to the app store being more strictly governed than the google play store. I've played the same game on a similarly priced ipad and android tablet and it ran infinitely better on iOS

I don’t think anyone can conclude that kind of blanket statement. In fact it could be the opposite.

 

You may have noticed the game “Angry Birds” was released on the App Store as a premium app, but on the Play Store it is free. Why would that be?

 

The developers worked out, that even though they have staggeringly excellent sales of Angry Birds on iOS, they made more out of simply deploying the app free of charge, with ads.

 

This means that those Android revenue comes from two streams: Ad unblock in-app purchase, and Google Ads.

 

In this case, the iOS has no need to use in-app purchases, while the Android user does - would this make them more likely to use in-app purchases?

I've never owned an Apple-phone or -tablet, but from what I've seen from the sidelines, this is exactly my impression as well; Apple has stricter quality-control on their store and the people who buy Apple-devices are generally viewed as being more wealthy by the devs than Android-owners, so the devs are more willing to put more effort into producing somewhat more expensive, but better-quality games -- at least as far as I can tell. I seem to distinctly remember having read an article on how iPhone-/iPad-owners are more willing to pay up-front for games, whereas on Android freemium-style works better.
