MxM isn't dead? Eurocom Ships RTX-Based MXM3 Upgrade Cards.

I remember being genuinely sad when Linus said that nVidia killed MXM. As a huge proprietor of upgradeable laptops, it seemed I would be SOL for buying an upgradable laptop.

 

European laptop maker Eurocom has now begun shipping RTX upgrade cards based around the MXM3 standard for their existing lineup of high end laptops. The prices aren't half bad either, an RTX 2080 upgrade (from a GTX 1080) is only $250 USD(per notebookcheck.net). Prices for standalone cards is currently unknown, but I hope to see those soon as well.

 

Though Dell has created their own DGFF standard, the future of that is unknown and still keeps you within the lines of one company rather than many.

I thought Eurocom makes their own laptops?

The MXM standard has to live on via OEMs and I sure hope it does, STX motherboards rely on stuff like that to be the best SFF out there

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

Wrong. Eurocom is Clevo much like sager or Origin. Clevo allows you to customize what you mass order in a way from what is pretty much a  feature checklist- this is why old alienwares (which were also clevo for a time) had some unique features like HDMI passthrough for the screen which they kept for a while after clevo. You can actually still ask for that feature from clevo (and a couple of clevos had it), but nobody does. 

 

Some years ago, Eurocom set themselves apart from other Clevo rebrands by offering extreme options like the top core count desktop xeons (not just desktop enthusiast like others most of the time) and stuff like that which was available from others time to  time, but prety much always avaible from Eurocom. They were overpriced, but its where you'd get a mobile super workstation

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Would be super cool if Linus did this and used an Xbox 360 to mod into a PC instead of an original XBOX

They're trying to kill off as much upgradeablity as they can. You used to be able to upgrade:

  • Battery
  • CPU
  • RAM
  • Screen
  • HDD
  • CD/DVD Drive

Now a days you're lucky if you can even replace the battery without it being soldered to the laptop.

Eurocom is a clevo reseller, but they usually have better loadouts requested from clevo. When you order from the oem, you actually have a lot of customization options.
