Case mod in a day, quick and dirty.

mr moose

Two days Ago I realised I needed to get my PC of the floor so I could install some drawers under my desk.  The problem with putting my pc on the desk is that it needed to be smaller. The problem with smaller is the old fermi furnace inside my case can barely handle the temp. of my room as it is.  The room is a studio, it has no windows, no airflow, is fully insulated and has curtains surrounding most of it.  In fact when I turn the projector and pc on together the room regularly reaches 40oC in summer.

So the problem is I need a small case with adequate cooling for an inadequate environment and I don't want it to be louder plus I want it done in a day.

ENTER:  The Quick and Dirty case mod.

Please excuse the quality of the pictures, because I did it in a day I didn't bother using a real camera.

Original case: lost the picture, nut it was a coolermaster ripoff, big and ugly.

The case I want to use but clearly need's modding to improve airflow and not be quite so hideous.

Oh look, if you go digging in old cases you find relics:

Removed the top, mobo, hdd, PSU and front panel:

Cutting the rubbish out of the front panel to improve airflow:

Cutting a new grill to clean up the appearance a little:

Test fit:

Modifying the 5.25" bay to take the USB and front audio hub:

Glue in place:

Bogging up the rough bits, I think the Americans call it bondo:

Case painted and grill fixed in place:

Usb hub sanded and plasticoated, along with some old school buttons for start and reset:

Case ready for installation:

To assist the air in I put in a corsai AF120 quiet edition:

And becasue you can't see it a noctua 92mm NF-B9:

No room for cable management :(

Installed and running:

medium.Photo095.JPG.fee5477db1d77462c068

Success,  Without increasing the noise, the GPU runs at 39oC at idle 55oC normal running and about 80oC under moderate load.

CPU seems to hang around the 41 mark per core and under load about 56oC

Again sorry for the quality of the pics.

Cheers for looking.

Good jobs, and very essential. These OEM looking cases need some sunshine they're all dying. You've definitely brightened up my day.

Pretty awesome. Proof you don't need to spend tons on a case to get good airflow (just nice tools).

Nice switches on the front, have a really industrial look to them.

But why keep the Windows sticker on the side? :(

Could use a modular PSU, non-modulars are a pain to deal with.

True, I think I might invest in a modular unit next upgrade cycle. The windows sticker is well a relic too I guess, I just didn't do anything to the side panels. I'll just peel it off later.

I think I might plan one out from scratch a do it properly, see how I go with something a little more complicated and or intricate.

@mr moose the images broke!

Ahh yes, they were hosted on photobucket who changed the terms to limit 3rd party hosting to paying customers.  I'll edit them when I work out where I can host them or embed them on the forum or something.

Cheers for the notification.
