Metro Exodus exclusivity deal with Epic Store, But Steam preorders will still be fulfilled

It's definitely extra shitty that they are retroactively taking games off other stores, that is fair. But I really think people are underestimating how much that cut factors into it besides the offer epic is making. Which isnt even considered sustainable if they didnt have fortnite money.

It's not sustainable for too long obviously. But for now they do have Fortnite money. So they want to invest it wisely in these few years to put themselves in a position similar to what Valve does. So that they have a good reliable income via the store rather than the risky proposition of trying to make AAA games. In these good years they want to make Epic a big platform with these deals. It's a good business plan.

It could backfire on them if it turns into an arms race. E.g. despite the money that Epic has made recently still EA and Valve are much richer than them. If Origin and Steam start resorting to the same tactics then it will be a big  problem both for Epic.

Epic has this other thing for good reliable income, something scalable and with far reach in the game industry. You might have heard of it, it's called Unreal Engine XD

Don't give the Epic Store a dime of your money. We cannot have PC game sales fragmented by exclusivity on a million different launchers like the way video streaming is going. If we don't stop this now the next steps could end up being exclusive games that only run on Nvidia or AMD cards depending on who pays more for the rights. Seriously I hate that their is orgin and epic and all these other studio stores. All it does it make it a pain to get games in one spot with one program.

I wonder how much Steam preorder skyrocket now before it will be taken offline :P

The thing that bothers me most is that they had this up on Steam for pre-order for a while already. Luckily those who ordered on Steam will be able to keep it, but this feels like a sell-out. I understand it's for Epic to get a hold in the game platform market, but I do blame Deep Silver a bit as well for leaving a platform just before release.

Well the game is also launching with Denuvo DRM. So I'll be waiting until then ( 2020 ), when it's either removed or on sale anyway.

doesnt matter. They were and they have been the defacto choice for anyone not making their own store for just their own games.

Not really, there was always itch.io, gamejolt, and others that indie enthusiasts have known about.

I can understand a month or two, but a year? That's way too long and the initial sales will have dropped by then.

J/K sure whatever: I'll do what I was planning on doing anyway: get it when it gets deeply discounted, whenever that's Epic or Steam I think I'm too jaded to fucking care at this point: fuck it I have hard drive space in spades just install shit installers all over it, whatever.

It does matter. Steam has been the non-bought choice of many publishers because of the quality and reputation of their platform - not because they threw money at 3rd-party developers to prevent them from selling their game on another platform.

I think you heavily underestimate the contribution of Steam being ubiquitous on the developers' "choice" to use it. To some extent, it compares to stating that programs were made for Windows because of "the quality and reputation of the platform" and nothing else...

hen publishers pay for exclusivity then the quality of service isn't a factor and there is no competition to do better - only to ink a deal first.

I agree that additional distribution channels with exclusivity deals isn't necessarily an improvement - only multiple alternatives to accomplish the same would be true competition. I also see that competition in such a market would always be difficult, as consumers' will tend to stick to a single platform, and some network economics are at play too (some people seem to like the "social" part of these platforms), so the playing field isn't really leveled for the newcomer.

So now I've got to have Origin, Uplay, Steam, and Epic Games. No one is going to use Epic Games. They forget, they got famous for a FREE to play game with microtransactions, not a game people had to actually purchase. In my humble opinion I believe this will genuinely hurt Metros latest title sales wise.

Last time i checked Unreal Tournament wasn't a free to play game. Epic have been around for a while and along with digital extremes they are developers that actually care, the reason devs are running to this store is two big reasons I see:

1. Epic has Fortnite = Epic has money = They are not going to shut shop and run anytime soon.

2. The Significantly less aggressive %cut they are taking compared to steam.

Dam it, I wanted Metro Exodus because I loved the previous two...

Guess I have to wait untill 2020 then.... If I manage to.

I love how everyone was ok with steam being the only platform shit was released on, but people do the same thing on epic and we're all up in arms.

Oh no fuck competition that's bad. I want one company to control distribution on PC entirely because fuck me if I have to in stall another launcher.

MS does this is windows store, EA does this with origin, blizzard with battlenet ubisoft with uplay, but no FUCK EPIC because they paid people to chose their platform. Fuck me for thinking we can have an actual competitor to steam that's not just for one company's games.

And most people i know hate that all those people have their own stores. A lot of them are much more awkward than steam and even when they aren't steam had a lot of years of dominance, and thats given it a big place in most peoples lives as a storefront. People like the connivance of a single place to buy.

If another store came along that directly competed with steam in the range of games it had on i don't think people would be so pissy. But 99% of the time it's not "you can use this store instead of steam". I.e. actual competition. but instead "You must shop here if you want to play game X". Which is an opposite of competition. They're offering a similar but ultimately completely seperate services, in much the same way a high end restaurant chain is not competing with Burger King or McDonalds. Which one you go to depends on what you want. Except in this case there's a serious inconvenience factor associated with the second option.

I’m a bit confused how you guys are putting all the blame on Epic for this, this is on the developer, they made the choice. Epic offers them a business deal, the developer decided that the compensation to go exclusive with Epic justified not distributing the game else where. Nothing shady about that, not one bit. Epic is trying to establish its service right now and has decided that the course they want to travel is trying to sign big exclusives, and considering the reported cuts that Valve takes from the developer I don’t blame them for going the Epic route. And how much of an inconvenience is it to you guys to have another launcher? Geez that never once entered my mind as being an issue.

Serious question here because maybe I don’t get it. What is the serious inconvenience with having to launch another portal? I mean from my standpoint all that’s involved beyond the initial install process is simply launching a different program so basically 2 clicks. Am I missing something?

Most of these run in the background and take up a fair bit of space on disc, also another place to track payment info and ofc the old "new windows edition" issue where some things are just done differently and it throws you off. And thats assuming there's complete feature parity. (Also odd bits like UPlay has been notorious in the past for being a bit of a dick with it's DRM system, no idea what it's like now).

How many of you go to more than one supermarket to do your weekly shop and how would you react if the only way to get some regular items was to go to 2 or even 3 different places?

If I could travel from store to store in quite literally 3-5 seconds I wouldn’t care. I know the comparison you were trying to make but I think that one doesn’t work. As for running in the background, I just actually close them and don’t have the start on boot up. None of the take up what i would consider to be a lot of disc space but I guess the term “a lot” is subjective. I just don’t see that specific angle holding water
