I'm curious if other members would like to see a tools thread or sub-forum.

 

Thinking along the lines of anything from buying advice to chronicling rebuilding of old tools to just shooting the breeze.

 

Any other tool-lovers out there? (Insert snickering here).

Screwdriver specs: Long, pointy. Turns things. Some kind of metal.

Ifixit 64 bit set for electronic repair. Milwaukee tools for larger screw drivers. Bosch for ratchets and wrenches. Dewalt for cordless drills. Yeah and other various brands

I'm an auto tech so I got quite the assortment. Last inventory I did was about $13k and that was only my service cart. Not my main tool box

 

Recent purchase is a Milwaukee m12 dremel looking tool. Lasted about 30 seconds on mid speed cutting through plastic before it drained the battery. Hoping a drain and recharge improves it, but not a good initial impression.

Not sold on electric lawn equipment yet for that reason, overheating. It'll get better eventually, just as the battery tools took a while to overtake air tools.

Software tools would go in programs and feautures. 

 

Hardware could be interesting. Linus has noted he uses ifixit. Hardware modding and cases might be a good place for this.

I usually use Stanley and Makita tools since they're usually pretty reliable.

My dad's had a Makita drill for about 15-20 years now and the only problem has been the battery (but that's fairly easy to fix).

I wouldn't mind having a dedicated tool thread where we can discuss and show off our toys tools.

 

For portable power tools, I have a herd of 18v Ryobis, some dating back around 20 years or so. What I like most about Ryobi is it has amintained ininterchangeability of it's tools and batteries over the decades. Old Ryobi tools work with today's batteries and vice versa. My tools don't get heavy enough usage, like, say, a contractor would, to justify more expensive ones. The only Ryobi 18v tool I didn't like were their earlier jigsaws. They just couldn't hold a blade straight. The newest, brushless model finally has a chuck that holds a blade about as straight as one can expect.

 

For someone who is just starting out with 18v power tools, however, I would suggest Ridgid becasue of their lifetime warranty. Both Ridgid and Ryobi are made by the same manufacturer.

 

Some of my tools are older than I am. I have quite a few I got from my Daddy, one of which also belonged to my paternal grandfather (an out of square framing square that I will never part with even though I use a newer one).  Daddy also had a drawknife that belonged to my maternal grandfather but that disappeared, along with a bunch of other tools when my sister, brother-in-law, and I were going through things before the estate sale. Daddy had dementia and I suspect he loand out tools to "friends" who forgot to return them (it's also possible a certain neighbor filtched many of them although it couldn't be proved).

 

I'm a regular tool whore although I don't buy tools unless I'm actually going to use them. Tools stores are like candy stores for me. I used to be a cabinet maker and also had some machine shop and welding training back in college (Daddy was a machinist--tool and die maker and model maker--and a diehard DIYer so I picked up my love of tools and some of my skills from him). I've had almost 70 years to be collecting tools.

Love my Makita, got a new one a while go, not as good as my corded one, but works a treat.

 

Not like my Briggs and Stratton President lawnmower, or my STHL lawnmower, those suck bad! My fav lawnmower is easily my trusty John Deere.

I've got a variety of tools I use for work. Recently upgraded some screwdrivers, nut drivers to Klein tools. Very good tools and worth the money IMO. I also use a Fluke Multi Meter and I do have some other cheaper tools as well. Can't remember all brand names. Some of it is from harbor freight.

 

For cordless power tools I use Ryobi at home and at work I got the drill from harbor freight. Forgot what it's called lol

I doubt there is enough interest for a sub-forum for just tools, but I think it could fit into the Workbench section somehow... Case Modding and Hobby Electronics both end up being a little tool related, would be kind of nice to have a section for Tools and how to use them, and a lot of threads from those two sub-forums would fit into it.

 

Currently my tool project is to replace all my main tools with Knipex, about halfway through just buying them when they go on sale. Around 10 years ago Lowes tried to sell Knipex and no one bought them due to the cost and they were clearanced out. I had no idea what they were but figured for a few bucks I may as well grab a few pairs here and there... in hindsight I should have bought every single one. Just about all of their tools are perfect, and my favorite part is the oldschool dipped handles that actually hold up. Channellock still has the dipped handles, but they'd either slide off or start to get gummy from oils and solvents.

 

As for old tools, I have a small assortment of hand tools, but my favorite old tool is this saw. Every time I use it I try to spend an hour or two cleaning it up some more, eventually I want to get around to repainting the red pieces.

And on the subject of saws, just picked this up last month. I've really been wanting a sliding saw, but my bench for it will end up being against a wall so a normal slider wouldn't work with the slides sticking out the back. This one has two folding arms for the slide part so it barely takes up any more depth than a standard miter saw. With a riser block, it can cut up to 18" wide boards. So far the only downsides I've found are a odd size dust port, and it looks like they started to implement a shadowline guide on it, but never put the electronics in it... so must have found that is patented or something, sure would have been nice tho. There are a few Youtube videos of people making their own that I'll have to try at some point.

Same company also owns Milwaukee. As for the lifetime warranty, don't actually expect to use it more than a few times. Sales person had my family talked into how amazing Ridgid was, so between several people in the family/company we bought 10 or so kits. A few years in and I don't think a single tool out of ~50 was still working, they refused to warranty anything after a few claims and started giving us a huge run-around where first it had to be in store (Home Depot), then it had to be shipped in, then it had to be taken to an authorized repair center 100 miles away (ran out of a guy's house...). Finally we were told we've exceeded the "lifetime" use of the tool, just a complete PITA to deal with. Now, we are REALLY hard on tools and do have a lot of switch/motor failures even still with Dewalt/Milwaukee and their tools that shutdown all the time to protect themselves, but over half the Ridgid stuff that broke was barely used and several pieces were DOA out of the box or fresh as a replacement. When they started denying warranty claims I dug thru the graveyard and was making whole tools out of several broken ones and a vast majority of the failures were loose wires at the switch, tabs on the motor, or armature wires. Its basically Ryobi assembly/design quality, with Milwaukee material quality.

 

The whole thing left a real bad taste in my mouth for Ridgid, I'm sticking with Milwaukee for my personal tools... they've had their fair share of issues, but nowhere near as bad.

So far the only downsides I've found are a odd size dust port, and it looks like they started to implement a shadowline guide on it, but never put the electronics in it... so must have found that is patented or something, sure would have been nice tho. There are a few Youtube videos of people making their own that I'll have to try at some point.

Nice! I have a Bosch 12" sliding miter saw with a similar pivoting arm design. I've owned it for about a year now, and have used it a ton, I love it.

The whole thing left a real bad taste in my mouth for Ridgid, I'm sticking with Milwaukee for my personal tools... they've had their fair share of issues, but nowhere near as bad.

Do you know how to tell when a salespeople are lying? Their lips are moving. All seriousness aside, I've found Home Depot sales people don't always know their products or even their store.

 

Ridgid and Ryobi are not intended for heavy use, such as what a construction worker or really avid DIYer or hobbyist would subject their tools to. They are a less expensive alternative for the average or slightly more active homeowner. I've had only one Ryobi 18v power tool fail on me, a random orbital sander that released its built in magic smoke, and it was replaced under warranty.

 

I probably use my Ryobi tools more than most homeworkers normally will but they still have held up fine for me and probably will for the rest of my life ( and beyond since I'm pushing 70). I have yet to have a Ryobi Li-on battery die on me or even show signs of deteriorating, and some of them are around ten years old. My tools last because I don't abuse or heavily use them (abusing and heavily using are not the same thing). I respect any limitations they have. I never completely discharge my Li-on batteries; I use them until they just reach the last bar, then immediately swap them out for fully charged ones.

 

Heavy tool users should shell out the shekels for higher quality tools, such as Dewalt, Makita, or, if sufficiently flushed, Festool (I drool over the latter tools but just can't justify their expense for the usage I give them). Many of the old names in tools, such as Morse, Stanley, Black and Decker, or Craftsman (with the possible exception of non-consumable using Craftsman hand tools) have become poor quality and/or overpriced for the quality you do get.

 

There are some higher priced tools I will spring extra for, such as Starret measuring and layout tools. I recently shelled out around $100 for a cute little 4" combination square (and that was without a center head). I've seen too many out-of-square squares in other brands. I got funny looks from a salesperson when I bought a framing square at Home Despot a while back because I was using one square to check the squareness of another square (he never heard of that basic trick).

Sweet! I've been drooling over Ryobi's 36v (uses two 18v batteries)10" sliding mitersaw and a portable stand but I just haven't had a project yet that would justify the storage space needed and it's cost. Besides, Ryobi os constatly coming out with new improved versions of its tools so I prefer to wait until I actually need a tool before I buy it to make sure I get the latest and (usually) greatest.

I usually wait until I really need to buy a tool as well. At least for the most part, i've been known to buy Snap-On ratchets on a whim before.

 

All of my cordless tools are Dewalt US produced XR 20V line. I have a pretty good selection now. 

 

Could you do me a solid and delete the ECO BOM changes pics from your quote? That's work stuff that's unrelated and just somehow ended up getting pasted into the post. Thanks.

Snap-On got big by having their lifetime warranty and their tool trucks that would hop from jobsites to jobsites. They were convenient and their tools were pretty decent.

I dont use them professionally,  but I'm a pretty diehard DIY guy, and I like tools.

Nice. DIY is a good way to do things.

I used to be a carpenter for about 12 years so that explains those tools, and the greater portion of my expense. I work on my own vehicles and of course any techie has to have tools to build and fix electronics ... lol. I am hoping to put the carpenter tools to good use again one by building my own furniture, I have several designs to replace my current steel stupid looking bed frame.
