Every article I read about it, either from DICE, from interested bloggers, or from interviews with DICE, says that they are using DXR for their ray tracing.

DXR is the name of the part of the DX12 API that supports ray tracing, which runs on whatever implementation the device drivers are providing. In Nvidias case, that is RT cores when available.

So please, point me to where you are getting your information, because not only can I not find it, I am finding an overwhelming amount of the exact opposite of what you are saying.

Due to the computational cost it is now accepted that it's going to be a few more generations of GPU hardware before game developers can get good performance from lighting engines which are fully reliant on ray tracing. Until then ray tracing will have it's place in order to enable a few special effects or enhancements as we have seen in Battlefield V albeit at the cost of smooth framerates.

 

So what if want a fully ray traced game that can run on today's Geforce RTX graphics cards. We need a game whose maps are far less complex in terms of geometry, textures etc. Enter Quake 2 which was released 22 years ago in 1997. John Carmack's engine at the time utilized lightmaps.


A new mod called Q2VKPT by Christoph Schied has been released. The game now features fully dynamic global illumination using path tracing, with raytraced shadows, glossy reflections and one bounce of indirect lighting. Works on both  Linux and Windows. This effort took 12,000 lines of graphics code and they replaced the old openGL renderer with a new vulkan renderer.

As shown in the below video if you have an RTX 2080ti you can max out this game at 1440p and get very playable framerates of 40-60fps. You can also play at 4K with 20-30fps.

Trivia

In 2008 as a research project Intel created a ray traced version of enemy territory quake wars. This was run on clusters of high end servers or workstation, and it wasn't GPU accelerated.

Well it is a mod, and it is a game. But it's not a full game release. Edited topic slightly.

So the game is capped at 250FPS so it could potentially be over 400FPS for all we know and with ray tracing it is bouncing around below 60FPS WITH Vulkan too instead of OGL which in itself provides a tad of performance gains. Yeah no I feel like you could just redo the lighting and add an HD texture pack and get similar results. Minecraft has had the shaders mod which basically adds HD textures and a new lighting engine and that doesn't need tensorcores and so on. Cool to see it in other games but the performance hit is just too much

Raytracing is overrated.

It makes sense for some effects like Lighting and reflection and will be shown in next generation gaming more (without nVidia Hardware!).


But essentially its shit to replace rendering as it just cost too much performance.

But it doesn't have to be better, it just has to have its use and make sense for certain things. And that it does...

People are still on about ray tracing being useless. Ray tracing is a big part of what makes Hollywood CGI scenes look so realistic.

You can't have both real life looking graphics and no raytracing. Give developers more than a few weeks to come up with optimized algorithms to make the thing better. Geez louiz.

I cannot predict the future of PC gaming, but one thing is certain: It will include some from of ray tracing, whether you think it is currently worth the price paid or not.

P.S: You may see some contention on the point about CGI and ray tracing sprinkled throughout the web. This comes down to misunderstandings about what Photon Mapping in Renderman is. Photon Mapping and Ray Collection are highly efficient algorithms that can be used to pre-render ray traced scenes in a scanline based renderer.

I think most people are peeved that you can’t buy a high end card without having to fork out for technology that isn’t currently useful and most don’t want with the current performance.

Of course you can and it will look better and run faster than this. 

 

But this is a great proof of concept for RTX owners who will otherwise never get an application which is fully ray traced in real time and playable. In ten years with GPU advancements there is a chance that this could be how mainstream games are rendered.

 

This is a great app to geek out over for RTX graphics card owners.

There are still other cards on the market and AMD are about to release stuff too. Plus all those rumours of non RTX from Nvidia.  It's not like RTX is the only choice from here on in.

I'm excited for ray tracing, just not how NVIDIA is pushing it. Also, Quake 2 isn't exactly the best title for this. I'd much prefer something like Deus Ex or System Shock 2 being done with ray tracing. Level complexity isn't insane and you'd have time to appreciate the enhanced visuals because game is not a fast paced shooter but an RPG FPS. Plus, just imagine the gameplay possibilities, observing guards through realistic shadows and reflections and sneaking around based on that. But I guess I'll take whatever they offer.

tbh the huge performance hit (plus odd red filter) make it look less appealing than the same game without ray tracing, if you ask me. It's a nice "what if?" but there's not really a lot of gain beyond some extra graphical flair at the cost of 190 frames per second and I'm just

 

Why not Skyrim? That game doesn't need a high frame rate to be enjoyable.

We've been over this, the cards have only just come out, it's actually being taken up faster than any other new tech. If we don't see any decent games using it in a year year and a half from now I'll join you in the too much noise and no goods. that's not true.

They are partially rendered, partially raytraced...

As Raytracing only makes sense for certain portions of the image, they are doing it the "hybrid way".

There are some things where Ray Tracing is useful and better than everything else. And that's what it should be used for.

Yes, SOME Raytracing. where it makes sense, nobody doubts that.

Thing is: For most things it doesn't make much sense.

 

Not even in every game. There are games where you absolutely would want huge amounts of Raytracing. And there are games where it doesn't make a difference and people would switch it off anyway. 

 

That's the thing, its not _THAT_ amazing, but it has its role and will play it well, where i makes sense.

It must not however be forced to do things that it sucks at. And this game is in that category.

"First ray traced game" not really first when this https://codeparade.itch.io/marblemarcher is basically ray traced and seems to have been released a couple days before this mod.

This one as well is old. It's been a few years since it existed. Admittedly it ran badly, but still.

Why not Skyrim? That game doesn't need a high frame rate to be enjoyable.

It's all in what a person chooses to appreciate. I can appreciate this work for the time that I know was spent, I appreciate that a classic game that many people enjoyed can take on a new life and experience. I appreciate it because I look at games more as art and enjoy the full picture.

 

There can be arguments made on both sides, but that just boils down to personal preference. Performance can be measured in many ways other than just average frame rates. That's not something I'm going to get into because there is no right or wrong.

 

Why not? Maybe this person used to play Quake as a kid and thought it would be cool, just like you think it would be better for Skyrim. As I alluded to previously, it's personal preference, someone else might find this enjoyable and appreciate it.
