My server got hacked?

Hello all,

im having some issues with my server, i keep getting blacklisted even tho i stopped sending emails months ago from my server/domain email address , and i made my website sent emails through gmail to my clients (forgot password/support). 

theoretically i should be good now, im not sending any newsletters anymore , i use gmail for the main emails that i need to send out and i even completely disabled from my platform emails in general even gmail does not work now.

But when i did a blacklist checked it said " last occurance was 5th jan of 2019" which is impossible since i disabled emails completely in early december

is it possible to get blacklisted after 4months (when i used to send newsletters) ?


i have a fear that someone hacked me or using my websites to send emails or something

how can i detect such things?

also  my server is a vps which means is shared..maybe the other domains on the same server do the spamming and the whole server gets blacklisted.. is this a possibility?

Yeah colocations can be put on ban lists or flagged as spam due to improper use of a one of their IPs. The VPS I rent has a similar issue were google requires me to use a captcha every time from that IP.

Once you get black listed once it is very hard to get off since blacklists feed off each other a little, once you get on one you get put on others because you made it onto the first one. Since its not instant and DNS records take about a day to update, the delay period is in terms of days/weeks.  If you manage to get removed from the first one you would still be on the second one and so on and so on. 

 

What you could do is just make another domain name and have it redirect to the old one or the other way around if that is easier. As long as the emails aren't coming directly from that domain you should be able to do it.

i think my server is infected somehow and sends spam emails..

 

how can i scan the server for infections? using ubuntu

 

i also have a website hosted with a wordpress installation 

 

i really need to scan my server for malicious scripts or anything that may cause this

 i think i found the issue..wordpress installation has a file named xmlrpc.php which is enabled by default and its vulnerable to attacks and mail spamming

 

i checked my var/log/mail.log and auth.log files and i noticed many tried to access the server and many emails were sent from my server

 

i installed the disable xml-rpc  plugin to disable it  

is there anything else i can do?

move mail server to a new VPS + buy a new domain (change from .com to .org). It's quite challenging to get off a blacklist - it is not automatic.
