Slow SSD speed after cloning from HDD

Bayron

So yesterday I cloned my hdd whit my windows 10 professional OEM to newly bought SSD, now it looks like it works fine(fast boot time etc) but when I do Cristal speed test the results are just so bad compered to results about that SSD by some reviews.

My SSD is Kingston a400 240gb. Used space 148 of 223 gb.

Drive I cloned from WD blue 500gb

Program I used for cloning: macrium reflect

Do I need to change any settings after cloning to speed up something or it's just normal that it works so slow?

Tnx for help :)

It's one of the worst SSD on the market. Read some forums where people complain about speed. Maybe firmware update help. It's not the first time when Kingston makes SSD that is much slower than it should be.

But don't worry so much about measured speed. In every day use it will be still great improvement over HDD.

Well I was on tight budget and when I searched info about it I found only good reviews, even asked in this forum and people sad it good for it's price.

Yeah it's faster than my hdd :)

You should probably optimize it (I'd recommend using SSD Fresh), have enough free space on it (at least 20%) and use decent SATA controller drivers.

this is why you DON'T CLONE to SSD's from HDD's, clean installs the only way, I cloned the work computer and it wasn't much faster if at all then months later did a full reinstall and it was night and day performance difference.

I have OEM copy of Windows it's harder to reinstall it cuz I must call to Microsoft then, I think cuz I called to active it.

This is not true! All that crap like "clean install is the only way" should be removed from professional forum. I cloned dozens of HDD/SSD and it work always as good as clean install (except I don't need to configure everything from zero and install lot of programs again). Your one, single bad case (and probably use of some crappy software) doesn't mean that you have any experience.

@Bayron: your drive is about 70% full and your system probably do something while you checking speed (it may be optimization, superfetch or even unnecessary defrag). Especially that day after first test, your results are better. You can boot from HDD (if you have your old system) and check your SSD speed while is not using by system. It will show you real speed. Also - take note that all tests (or at least lot of them) are made on empty drives with all empty cells.

If you want to see good speed in CrystalDiskMark, disable superfetch, prefetch, indexing etc. That minimizes read/writing in background and you'll see improvement.

And really, do not expect that your read/write speeds will be better because you made "clean" install. They may be better right after that (because your drive will be only few percent full) but after you install everything again - you'll see again how "great" Kingston drives are.

BTW.

And one more:

https://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Kingston-A400-240GB/Rating/3953

Notice that range of results are very wide. And for sure most of them are lower than declared values for this model.

Oh tnx a lot :) yeah I just bought SSD on thight budget and it was the best option at that price point, well at least one who's name I have heard before. And I have no experience whit SSD because they always are at such high price point but now the prices dropped and I figured to order one whit a budget.

so the SAMSUNG SUPPLIED CLONING SOFTWARE that came with the 840 PRO drive is garbage?

boy you better check yourself before coming at me like that. this is a widely regarded fact with many many people experiencing the same thing, besides it never hurts to clean up a computer with a fresh install after years of use anyway. in fact you are the first person I've ever seen claim it doesn't make a difference.

Maybe because I don't repeat stupid myths, my operating systems work for years without reinstall.

You should listen to more experienced users than those who know only one method (clean install) and pretend to be specialists (great ones, who knows how to install os - really difficult).

It's completely normal that is difficult to find good opinions on internet. Majority of users are not experienced ones - they just repeat the same as other (also not so experienced) users says.

Not so long ago many people thinks that all registry optimizers, ram optimizers and system cleaners (or driver instalation tools) are great. It changes because more and more people explain why its bad. I hope the same will be with stupid reinstalling system myth.

And Samsung is not one of the best cloning software if you ask me.

Working and being as fast as they can be are 2 very different things, shit you rarely ever NEED to reinstall an OS, that doesn't mean you won't benefit from a clean install, I've been building PC's for like 17 years now, I built my first computer like 3 years before Youtube was even a thing and have been installing copies of windows since Windows 95 released on  a couple dozen 3.5" floppy discs (most of which I had till about 3 years ago) I think I have some clue what i'm talking about here. Filling an SSD beyond 50% isn't the only thing that slows it down (and yes you can regain speed by clearing crap off the drive), Years of use simply leads to years of program updates and old shit being left around wasting space on the drive, so getting rid of stuff you don't need can help SSD performance, there where also issues with TRIM and windows 7 when cloning drives with windows 7 TRIM didn't always enable properly, combine all these little things together and a clean install is the better way.

I pretty much agree with homeap5. I've cloned several HDDs to SSDs without any problems using Macrium Reflect. I won't say that Samsung's Migration Software is garbage but it (including the one that came with the old 840 PRO; I had one of those) is limited in capability. If you have more than two partitions to clone over, the clone would fail or be only partially successful. Macrium Reflect, on the other hand, handled four partitions (system Reserved, C:/, a data partition, and the factory recovery partition) without breaking a sweat (wait, does software sweat?).

If one maintains their drives properly, it should never be necessary to reinstall an OS to restore performance. You may be able to gain some performance by doing a clean install but, often, the slight difference is not worth the hassle of reactivating the OS license, reinstalling programs, restoring the settings you had, finding the correct drivers (which aren't always available for download), etc.

I never had problems with TRIM not enabling properly, partitions being properly aligned, etc. As long as one's OS was working fine before cloning, it will work just fine afterwards.

Exceptions to the above include when moving from a SATA drive to an NMVe drive or an MBR drive to a GPT drive. Most of the time, cloning works just fine and results in performance that is good enough (one thing many people have trouble understanding is that good enough is often good enough). Any performance differences between a cloned OS and a fresh install will rarely be noticeable (which counts far more than bench marks) unless the OS was having problems to begin with.

But you know that is no longer win95/98 era, right? Win10 or even win7/vista is not the same crap as win98 with its limited and bugged registry?

Wake up man, lot of things changed. I also have years of experience - but not only with repeating the same actions since win95 (clean install all the time).
