[2nd UPDATE: Vivo Apex 2019 out][UPDATED: Meizu Zero announced]No hole, no port phones to be announced by Meizu and Vivo

suicidalfranco

It appears many people's wet dream in this forum, or nightmare (where I would stand) might come true sooner than what they thought.

Vivo, the OEM you might remember for releasing the first notch-less with the motorized selfie camera back in early 2018 or the even crazier notch-less phone with two displays at the end of 2018, has teased the world with what seems to be the first port-less, button-less phone.

Quote

Vivo started a campaign where it let people touch the phone, but not see it and they described it as metal soap.

The phone is supposed to be announced on January 24th and while we wait for one more we are left with a teaser video from the company

which led to users trying to make renders out of the little bits of information they could getter around it

image.png.45571ffdfb931abf16e2f064521c9b95.png

If you can't wait one more day, Meizu may steal the thunder from Vivo and announce their "no hole" phone today, from the internet could getter from this post released yeasterday

image.png.1f545ff08b7f36099662ea46d8128967.png

which when brightening up allowed people to see what  was being blacked out

image.png.4678f59839b73f04768c53147c29612c.png

And now all we can do is wait and see what they'll really be like.

Will update as soon as the events occur.

UPDATE 1:

Meizu is out, and has teased it's no hole phone. On the bright side: it's also notchless

Quote

The Meizu Zero uses touch capacitive panels on the side as replacements for the conventional power and volume buttons (similar to what HTC did with the U12+, only without the buttons protruding the frame). For a speaker the Meizu Zero uses a piezoelectric transducer under the display

Removing the USB port is trickier to compensate for. The Meizu Zero is a wireless charging-only phone that offers Meizu-developed 18W charging, making it the fastest-charging phone wirelessly. Data transfers will only be conducted over Wi-Fi and mobile networks.

There's not even a SIM slot on the Meizu Zero - it uses eSIM, similar to the new crop of Apple iPhones.

On the front the Meizu Zero packs a 5.99-inch AMOLED screen with an in-display fingerprint scanner and a 20MP selfie camera.

On the rear there's a 12MP + 20MP dual camera (consisting of the Sony IMX 380 and IMX 350 AI sensors) while on the front there's a 20MP selfie camera. There's a Snapdragon 845 to power the Zero.

UPDATE 2:

And here comes the Vivo Apex 2019

image.png.58ea88ba1b1ad72866d1b828517d5581.png

Quote

Apex 2019 has a port, of sorts. Whereas the Meizu Zero relies entirely on wireless charging, the Apex 2019 uses what vivo calls MagPort - a magnetic connector on the rear that's used for charging and data transfer.

The 6.39-inch AMOLED display of the vivo Apex 2019 doubles as the speaker by using a piezoelectric transducer to emit sound. It's surrounded by very thin bezels with no sight of a selfie camera.

What's more interesting is the Full-Display Fingerprint Scanning - you can touch almost anywhere on the screen to unlock via the in-display fingerprint scanner - this would make it the most-advanced in-display fingerprint scanner out there.

The vivo Apex 2019, like Meizu's phone, uses a combination of capacitive touch and pressure-sensing to replace the standard power and volume buttons on the sides. This way you get the functionality of the buttons while retaining a seamless, button-less design.

Ah yes, just as I guessed years ago when the headphone jack was removed.

Eventually all phones will be like this, just like what happened to the headphone jack.

This is dumb... Wireless charging is both slow and impractical in a lot of charging situations. And my question is... what have we gained for this loss of convenience?? Nothing of real value. This better not be a trend.

Based on how my Anne Pro 2 keyboard randomly lags the HECK out, gets stuck repeating a letter, forgets how to keyboard or stops working altogether while I have it connected over Bluetooth whereas it's 100% flawless when connected over a USB-C cable, nty. You'd have to be actually insane to think that Bluetooth is stable enough to replace a wired connection!

Give me ports! Give me options! Taking them away for the sake of "pushing us forward" just makes everything infinitely more inconvenient for us.

Yeah the trend of taking away features away on high end phones for fashion is dumb. I want my phone to at least have a power button, volume buttons, and USB-C, and a headphone jack. No notch is a nice as well.

ok so now you cant even get files off it through USB? this is the most FUCKING RETARDED development i have seen. fuck this, phones are literally getting less desirable by the day it seems.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

#1. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

#2. It's best to keep your mouth shut; and appear to be stupid, rather than open it and remove all doubt.

#3. There is nothing "wrong" with being wrong. Learning from a mistake can be more valuable than not making one in the first place.

At the moment no.

But with the way things are progressing it will eventually become accepted, just like people accept that batteries are no longer removable.

Someone needs to take the first step forward.

Network transfers, from my own experiences, are almost always slower than a wired connection, plus there's issues inherent to networks like data collisions and (for wireless networks) dropped connections. Also, data caps are (unfortunately) a thing.

If you don't have good wireless coverage in your home, have data caps or live in a rural area then network transfers or using cloud storage is a complete no-go.

I mean MAYBE for buttons, SD cards, and headphone jacks.

But what about a charging port?

Wireless charging is veeery slow compared to charging through a cable. I just don't think I can ever imagine using a phone with only wireless charging.

Qi charging is up to 15W, which is more than half of what my quickcharger can do (full charge in ~1.5h)

So 3h charging time isn't that bad, that's what it was like just a few years ago.

Obviously wireless charging needs to make progress and speed up in the next few years, it's not gonna stay like this forever.

Also as battery capacities increase and device efficiency increases, it becomes less and less necessary to charge.

I personally only need to charge my phone every 2-4 days.
